Herbal Gathering #3

Yesterday was such a nice day.  Everyone was there.  The first meeting we were missing one person – one of the new girls.  The second time we were missing one of the girls who has been studying for some time – years.  Also, I had to leave early last time.  So it was very nice to have everyone together yesterday for the entire meeting.  To me it felt like the first real bonding of everyone, though I came home feeling a bit sad when I realized I had not actually really greeted everyone personally.  I must learn to get out of my “me” mode by 7:45 on Wednesday mornings.  ~:-D

My beautiful teacher gave me a bit of white sage after the meeting.  I was excited about this.  I had purchased a couple of pieces from a health food store last week after the meeting, but I was not sure the quality or the correctness of what I was buying (though I guess it’s all the same plant at least?).  So today I am going to be burning a piece of what my teacher gave me.

The meetings go by very fast, in large part due to the beauty that surrounds us while we work.  I always think of the word “enchanted” when I see the house and garden, so I decided to look up the word and know exactly what I am thinking of when I think “enchanted.”

Enchanting: very delightful and charming

So that’s the right word.

I am making a simpler’s tincture of mugwort this week.  My teacher was so kind to let me take some mugwort since I already have a tincture of motherwort, which some of the others were going to tincture.

I looked at my medicine cabinet this morning, happy for what I have so far, and happier still to think what all will be in it by the time I am done.  And what all I will have learned.

As a side note, but certainly related, I have been thinking about what I am putting into my body daily.  Every bite of food or sip of drink or plant or whatever has an action.  Why would I eat things that I know are bad?  I am thankful for food and all that we have and sometimes we must eat and be thankful for whatever is put before us, but when given the choice, it makes sense to eat good things.

We did a plant meditation about the yarrow (Achillea).  It was very nice.  Calming.  Teaching.

We harvested more comfrey, some nettles and some yarrow to put in the drying shed.  (Note to self:  you must make a small drying shed for your own yard.)

We sang again.  We pulled weeds and mulched.  We had a wonderful hot tea and one of the girls brought a fantastic pesto.  That’s all for now.

Wordless Wednesday

Homegrown Garlic

I harvested several more bulbs of garlic today.  Garlic is so easy to grow!

Whenever I buy a bulb of garlic, I usually end up with several cloves that start to sprout before I can use them.  I just go out to my garden spot and plant them.

Garlic planted in the fall is usually ready to harvest the next early spring.  Garlic planted in early spring will usually be ready to harvest in the fall.  Of course this can depend on your climate.

You can tell when it is ready to harvest because the top (above ground) part of the plant will begin to yellow and wilt.

I wanted to show you my newest mosaic birdbath.  I just finished it up last night.

I love the colors and I love the way the little angel sits on the side.

Thank you for looking!

7 Random Facts About Me

I have been tagged! Thank you, Oney! This is my first game of “tag.” ~:-D I’ll be tagging two more people, so here are the rules!

Here’s how it works: Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their seven things, as well as these rules. You need to tag others and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them that they have been tagged and to read your blog

Who Says I Can’t Have A Meadow?

I know it’s not a real meadow, but it’s close enough for me.  We live on only 1/3 of an acre, right in town.  I am not complaining, mind you, because I love my little patch of Earth.  I am so thankful.

Still, I longed for a field of wildflowers.  I begged my husband to please just not mow a section of yard.  Even if it’s only 5 feet by 5 feet.  For me.  Please?

Thanks to a little extra seed sowing and some selective weeding in that patch of ground, this is what I got.

It is full of insect life.

It is a nature-lover’s paradise for sketching and just enjoying.

In Search of Lady-Like Clothing

I am always on the hunt for romantic, lady-like, and Victorian clothing.  To buy from places that manufacture and sell items that are new, I have found that it costs more than I can pay.  But I am a thrift store smart shopper, so it’s okay.  I don’t find the perfect item very often, but when I do, I know it’s going home with me to the tune of a couple of dollars.

Yesterday I found a great dress.  A beautiful cream color, all-natural material, a hem of lace and so soft and clean.   It’s beautiful with my locket.

Anyway, here’s the dress donned with a paisley scarf tied at the hip.
