My birdbaths really draw in all kinds of insects. I happened to spy a wasp in the middle of a drink, and I happened to have my camera with me, so I got a picture!

Isn’t it amazing to watch wildlife?? I think it’s easy to take it for granted, but if we really stop and pay attention, we’re in awe of His great creation.

for you to leave a comment, but you can also e-mail me at lynn AT thehealthyhomeschool.com

Hi Lynn, I’m not a mom but am an avid fan of homeschooling, think everyone should have to do it for their children! How’s that for appropriation of the major buzz phrase of the decade?
I found your site when it popped up first in my search for insects that love water.
I too have wasps using my birdbaths, and because I’ve found many drowned ,and rescued many from doing so, I’ve now provided a cheap plastic stemware something-or-other very shallow item to serve fancy drinks in except that it’s about 10 inches in diameter. I’ve filled it with pea gravel and refresh the water frequently. The gravel gives wasps and other sippers safety from the depths.
Next I’m going to create a “seep” for butterflies – a little mud hole. This year my field milkweed will blossom for the first time so I know I’ll have monarchs. They’ve been around checking it out. And I’m growing a dill patch for tiger swallowtails so I know they’ll be coming too. They’ll be looking for minerals in mud patches. I’ve tired of trying to keep even a little dirt patch wet enough to make mud in our usually-blazing midwestern springs and summers, but now I have a solution. More about that later.
Your site looks terrific and I’ll be back to exploure.
Can’t wait to read “aging beautifully” — too late for me, I’m already well-aged like an old cheese, but maybe I’ll learn something. And I notice you have a a goat picture posted so you must be a girl of immense common sense. (As a homeschooler how could you be otherwise, hm?)
Later then.
hazeleyes,
I’m so glad you stopped by and left your comment. Nice to know fellow gardeners and insect lovers are finding me.
I’m definitely aging myself, and not sure how beautifully, but I do try to keep my joints and hair and skin the best it can be. It’s a job!!
I wish I had my own goat! That goat is a sweet goat we saw on a field trip. My mother is wanting to get some goats, and she has the room for it, so I hope she will.
Take care,
Lynn
