My daughter and I (mostly I) worked for about an hour in her room today to clean out some things to donate to Goodwill. I am sure she will get more things for Christmas, so I wanted to make space, but I also wanted to get rid of some of the “stuff” that has accumulated. Where does the ”stuff” come from?
Also, I had a few new things (thanks to Goodwill) that I had washed and dried and wanted to put in her room. Namely some curtains, a dust ruffle, and some pillow shams. Aren’t they great? Also, I have had a print by Jessie Wilcox-Smith that I have been wanting to frame, and I finally did that today. It is the print called Goldilocks.
Now that her room is pristine, we can get in there and play! We are about to do just that. I am sure you can see the doll houses that we made. They are ready and waiting…
It has really been on my heart lately to be careful with the time that I have been given. How I spend each hour will determine what I accomplish, what my children remember of me, how others perceive me, how I am measured as a wife, how I feel about myself…
There’s a little saying that I love:
Sow a thought, reap a habit.
Sow a habit, reap a character.
Sow a character, reap a destiny.
I have no idea who said this originally, but it’s a thought that runs through my mind at times and slows me down and says, careful what you do…
I want to make 2008 a year of more attentive care to my children, my daughter especially right now, and my husband. More thoughts about that later and what my hopes are.
I am starting a new book with my daughter. I found this old copy at — you guessed it — the thrift store. But you can still buy it new.
I am a 40-something-year-old mother of four delightful children, have been married for 22 years to my carpenter husband, and live in a 1921 farm-style house. I find the most joy in my garden, growing and harvesting herbs and flowers and caring for our pet rabbits.
I have a 21-year-old son, a 19-year-old son, a 16-year-old son, and a bright and bubbly (and very funny) 11-year-old daughter who is homeschooled.
I'm a North Carolina girl and I love sharing North Carolina links and information. I'm a book lover, bird lover, gardener and aspiring herbalist. I seek no help for my thrift store addiction. I do medical transcription from home part-time.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.
