I Hit The Jackpot

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Oh man, I was a happy thrift store shopper TODAY!  We were out of milk first thing this morning, which meant I had to run out and get some.  I like to stay home as much as possible these days, but no milk and someone’s goin’ to the store!

Princess of the Universe went with me and for some reason we decided to make a trip to a thrift store we don’t visit very often.  Would you believe they were having a book BAG sale?  And there was no one there at the book table but Miss Priss and me?  Usually there are a dozen people trying to fill up bags, but no one!  I kept looking around for the masses and they weren’t there.

29 books.  5 dollars.

I was thrilled to find the beautiful hardback copy of Felicity’s World.

This lamp I found is so cool!  It looks really old.  The very base appears to be marble.  What is so amazing is that the base and the globe shade were not together.  They were in different parts of the store, and I’m not sure they even go together.

I like this purse.  For a couple of bucks, when I find something dressy or funky, I buy it for carrying when hubby and I go out for dinner.  All I need is something to hold my cell phone and lip gloss.

This quilt alone with worth enough to go out today.  It is heavy, looks barely used and fits our king size bed.  3 dollars.

For 3.99 we got the jewelry box (which we have plans to redecorate, by the way) and this child’s tea set.  It is so sweet!

Guess who’ll be having a little tea party with Princess of the Universe?  We’re going to try putting this tea set in the dishwasher, except maybe the silverware which we’ll wash by hand.

Princess of the Universe has a new apron.  I don’t seek after Santa-covered things, but Santa happens to be on this, and the apron is so cute, so there you go.

I am stocking up on long-sleeve Ts since fall/winter is coming.  The sleeveless one?  Well I just cannot resist sparkles and such.  Especially on pink.

Princess of the Universe got some shirts too.

Last of all, is this pretty, vintage tablecloth.

With that, I’m off to bed!

Finishing up Very Last First Time

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Yesterday we finished up Very Last First Time.  It has been a really good study for us using Five In A Row for our lesson plans and then tying in items of interest that popped up along the way.   In my post a couple of days ago, My Symphony, there’s that line I love, “…await occasions, hurry never.”  I have been amazed again this week at how many appropriate occasions offer themselves to us when we are “rowing” a book.  :)

I was very pleased to see that Monday’s Reading Rainbow would be Dive to the Coral Reefs.  This rich 30-minute episode prompted us to compare what lives in warm tropical waters as compared to the icy waters around Ungava Bay.

Princess of the Universe painted a picture that includes coral reef, a dragonfish, a squid and a blue parrotfish.   She wrote in her nature journal about the parrotfish nibbling on coral and then excreting a trail of sand onto the ocean floor.  Is that what we end up building sand castles with?  Pretty cool.  8)

You know a FIAR book would not be complete to me unless we had a little reminder in the way of a doll house accessory!  I used a little matchbox to recreate Eva’s box that she pulls across the ice.  I looked through some of the little boxes on my sewing/craft desk and found a couple of little card charms that resemble picks or shovels.  A bottle cap makes a great mussel pan.

I was so thrilled when Princess of the Universe wanted to make her own little sled-box out of paper and tape.  Her box is deeper, which I commented is more like what Eva had.  And Michaela even tore up little pieces of black paper to make mussels for her pan.

Do you know it just made my heart sing when she said, “Mommy, I love my doll house.”

As occasion would have it, our little girl doll looks like she could pass for Eva.

We have enjoyed this book immensely!
