Simple School Lessons
By Lynn, on October 15th, 2008
Princess of the Universe woke up yesterday and exclaimed that there was nothing to eat for breakfast.
Nothing?
Really?
She did not want oatmeal. Or cereal. Or Toaster Strudel. Or Cream of Wheat. I remembered something she loves.

Hearkening back to How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World , I asked, Was it cinnamon that came from Sri Lanka? How about cinnamon toast?
Her eyes lit up!
Get your apron on!

It’s the simple things that are the memory builders.
Simple things are easily retained and used in real life.
Simple is so wonderful.
We made cinnamon toast together. In our messy Tuesday morning kitchen. Me and my Princess of the Universe.

I love having her here to remind me to step out of my busy life, get in the “row boat” and just enjoy our relationship.

About Lynn
I am the mother of four delightful children: a 23-year-old son, a 20-year-old son, a 17-year-old son, and a bright and bubbly 13-year-old daughter. I share an apartment home with my 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. My little home on the internet is called Rose Cottage because of my love for gardening, roses, and all things romantic and Victorian. Welcome.
I'm a North Carolina girl and I love sharing North Carolina links and information. I do medical transcription from home. My hobbies include making sweet little dolls from clay who are named and have their own stories to tell. I also make old-fashioned brooches. These are for sale in my Etsy shop.
For 13 years continuously, I homeschooled some or all of our four children, but the time came that our homeschool had to be closed. It was the end of a beautiful chapter in my life. I will always be a strong supporter of homeschooling and I will continue to review books and maintain my homeschool website, The Healthy Homeschool.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.

“It’s the simple things that are the memory builders.”
I like that line….
My son and I were just talking about that, how in school some ideas are not reinforced…
Math is built upon and reviewed year after year..
But other things are taught in a vacuum ..once said there done…
This conversation began because we were talking about the archaeology class he is now taking. .
He made mention how he never had a great history teacher, most were fact and date feeding so he took it in
and dumped it out on a test and than it was done…
He now has a wonderful professor that tells wonderful story about digs and history.
This is his favorite class and professor and laughed because his first test didn’t get the great grade that he is use to… but feels he is learning more and realizes that he needs to refine the note taking…
Hi Lynn
I always enjoy catching up on your blog. Your life is so beautiful
The walk through the woods was wonderful! I love that picture of you and your son that you added to the side bar. He looks reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin
French toast… yum! I love it when Annie and I have the time to cook together. Winter is the best, because there’s nothing else to do except bake
Have a beautiful week my friend!
hugs,
rue
I just looooove your blog. Your home is so charming and I hope you will post a picture of the outside of your home. I am imagining a cottage…..
Also, have you shown the dollhouse total front and back?
thank you so much for sharing your life for us to enjoy.

Louise, one of the things I most love about homeschooling is my daughter’s excitement over learning. Oh she still has days where she doesn’t want to “do” anything, but when personal interest strikes, it’s amazing to see, and homeschooling opens up every day of the calendar for that — totally!
Rue, thank you! You know I love your blog. I love that picture of “Big Joe” in my sidebar as well. He’s dear to my heart!
Becky, thank you so much for your comment. I find my blog to be great outlet for me. I really enjoy blogging, and one of these days am hopeful that I can print it out — the whole thing — as a permanent record for my children. I am waiting for an easy, inexpensive way. LOL. I am glad you enjoy it and I appreciate you visiting!

Lynn,
I echo the other reader’s sentiment. I have been on a trip out of the country to see family and upon returning I’m re-entering my life as I catch up on blogs I read regularly like yours. Seeing it again with fresh eyes, I wanted to encourage you to keep on – its a beautiful reflection of your life and a joy for us to visit. You inspire us all.
Love,
Denise
