Our North Carolina Notebook

Do you ever find yourself busy with something, which then leaves you with a child with “nothing to do?” Even worse is a day arriving with lessons not totally planned out for school.

Monday is a work day for me. I try to have lessons written out for each child. That helps everyone’s day to flow smoothly. Sometimes, however, Princess of the Universe flies through her lessons at lightning speed and needs more to do.

Well…

I have a ton of Our State magazines that sit in my office in a magazine box. I love to flip through them and get ideas from them. Many I’ve purchased at the thrift store for a quarter apiece. Some I bought new. I continue to buy them even now and am at the point of having too many.

An idea struck me. On Monday I presented Michaela with a simple composition book and said, “This will be your North Carolina notebook. I want you to just have fun with those magazines. Flip through them. Anything that interests you, cut it out and glue it into your notebook. Tell me about North Carolina.”

Each magazine in its entirety is devoted to North Carolina. How can she not learn? How can I go wrong?

She said, “I love to do things like this!” (Good for me.)

She sat for probably an hour and a half cutting out pictures and gluing them in. The magazines have maps, town names and pictures and local attractions, many renditions of our state flag, etc. She’s learning without even knowing it, and I love having her close by, working on the floor in my office.
