A Day Outside
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008Today we spent some time outside. It was a beautiful day here today. The temperature was just right, it was sunny. A perfect day for gardening. One thing I love about homeschooling is being able to switch things around a bit. We are doing some extra reading and math this evening in exchange for time outside today.

Oreo is up in the ”club house” with Princess of the Universe. Oreo looks like she wants down, but does Miss Priss let her go? No.

You have to slide down with me, Oreo! (Just between you and me, I was not sure how this would turn out, but Oreo behaved herself.)

I did some digging in the garden, getting the soil ready for some mustard greens, radishes, and — dare I say it — carrots. I want to see if I can get carrots out of this ground come late December. We have a yard full of leaves we are going to use as mulch/bedding to keep the plants warm. As Miss Priss said today, this is our school garden, so we’re testing. I also want to plant collards. Tomorrow some snow peas are going out. I want to see what they do, okay?

We decided to give these gourds a coat of primer. They’ve been hanging around for way too long. We’ll decorate them somehow for birdhouses. I’m not sure yet exactly how we’ll paint them, but it’ll be fun, I’m sure.

Michaela helped me with the gourds, and with the planting, and then she went back up into her little hideout to work on a scarf she’s making.

She seems to really enjoy this little knitting kit we bought at A.C. Moore’s awhile back.
She says we are going to make scarves for everyone at Christmas. She has even picked out the colors.
