How Many Clothes Do I Need?
By , on December 28th, 2008
I’m wondering. And deciding. And making a list. And cleaning out.

I found some articles to read, just to make sure that a thift store shopacholic like myself wouldn’t spontaneously combust or something if they whittled their wardrobe down to just their very, very, very most favorite things ever. And then got rid of something every time they bought something. You know, to keep the closet clean.
I mean in 2009 to manage my stuff and not to have it manage me. I also intend to enjoy thrift store shopping just as much as ever, but I intend to be a lot pickier and only get what I need.
Can I do it??

How Many Clothes Should You Have?
The articles above were helpful.
I’ll post what’s in my wardrobe when I’m done.

About Lynn
I am the mother of four delightful children: a 23-year-old son, a 20-year-old son, a 17-year-old son, and a bright and bubbly 13-year-old daughter. I share an apartment home with my 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. My little home on the internet is called Rose Cottage because of my love for gardening, roses, and all things romantic and Victorian. Welcome.
I'm a North Carolina girl and I love sharing North Carolina links and information. I do medical transcription from home. My hobbies include making sweet little dolls from clay who are named and have their own stories to tell. I also make old-fashioned brooches. These are for sale in my Etsy shop.
For 13 years continuously, I homeschooled some or all of our four children, but the time came that our homeschool had to be closed. It was the end of a beautiful chapter in my life. I will always be a strong supporter of homeschooling and I will continue to review books and maintain my homeschool website, The Healthy Homeschool.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.

I’ve been doing this too – in my boys’ closets. What a job! Definitely too many things in there. It is hard for me to weed out from the olders though as things get passed down. I’m sure I could do better.
I feel good about my closet though as I’m not sure I have even the “bare bones” by some of those lists. I could still weed though (esp the things that don’t fit well).
You are doing a great job!
Blessings,
Leslie
I have realized just the opposite…LOL. I have not purchased anything for myself for quite a few years and when I do I get something from GW…which is fine because I’m so thrifty…but my MIL gave me a Kohl’s gift card for Christmas and it forced me to get something for myself that I wouldn’t normally buy…($35 jeans that fit GREAT). My daughter told me that I really do need to start dressing more for my age because I was starting to dress “old”…LOL.
oooh good luck Lynn! Can’t wait to see the results!
A long time ago I pared down to what I really wear and it’s so freeing. I change my closet out each spring and fall and if I haven’t worn something that season it’s off to Goodwill. Exceptions are party clothes or special occasion-type things… but even them I’m pretty brutal.
I’m so sensory-challenged that I have to have things minimal. Clutter makes me certifiable. Too much stuff makes it hard for me to handle life properly.
Of course there’s a balance. I just bought a second pair of jeans after having only one pair for months… and since I wear jeans every day that was starting to be a problem!
Ummm… hey there Lynn– if you’re tossing that pretty pink top and black top that is on the top of the piles…you can send them my way!!!! smile, wink, nod!
Have a great day organzing!
Michele
Good luck with your tossing! It can be fun, really. I have regular household toss-athons, in addition to getting rid of one or two things for every new thing that comes in. I hate clutter, even if it’s hidden behind a closed closet or cupboard door. Probably the result of 22 years of living in small apartments. In NYC apartments especially, you just don’t have the luxury of space to keeping stuff around the house that you don’t use.
