Today’s Notables

Today was a work day for me and it’s not always easy to get up from being at my desk all day and then start on supper.  Sigh.  What to fix!  The easy days are the days I use the crockpot.  Today was not an easy day, but it ended up okay.

These are potatoes cut into pretty thin wedges and then tossed with a liberal amount of olive oil.  I stand them neatly in the pan, skin side down, because it seems the skins don’t stick so much.  I sprinkle them — again liberally, with sea salt, freshly ground pepper and paprika.  Then I bake at 400 degrees for probably 20-30 minutes or until done and crunchy and I don’t turn them or anything. They are the best fries ever.

You don’t need to know how many of these I can eat with ketchup.  Or not.

We also had salmon patties, slaw and homemade apple sauce.  Yum.

On another note, I called to renew a magazine subscription today and was totally blown away by the fact that this magazine — my favorite magazine ever…

is NO LONGER GOING TO BE PUBLISHED.

Why?  The man answering the phone could not tell me.  Just that the last issue I bought, Dec 2008/Jan 2009, will be the last one.  I am sad.

Was it your favorite magazine too?

Lynn

  • Sigh. Welcome to my world, where most of the magazines on my resume have faded into oblivion. Paper, postage, content, and editors are expensive, and advertising (not, alas, subscriptions) is what keeps them in business. Ad pages are waaay down, as you can imagine, so mags are folding like paper cranes. 30,000 media jobs were eliminated in 2008 alone, making me super grateful for my still-solvent clients!

    Cherish those back issues!

Iris, I got that idea just a bit from reading your blog, but it did not even occur to me to translate that over to this. Could it be? I guess it could. I am going to miss, miss, miss this magazine.

I also didn’t really think about just how dramatic the impact on every single person involved in the process. Wow.

  • Oh Lynn…those potatoes would far more phenomenal if you sprinkled them with Old Bay and skipped the paprika ; )

Yummo! Just right for this Maryland girl.

Sorry to hear about your magazine. I was all ready to re-subscribe to one that I found out will no longer be published. Bummer!

    Good Morning Lynn..

Your fries looked scrumptious!! I am sure I could out eat you…especially with a cold bottle of ketchup!

I love the ME magazine! Although, I didn’t subscribe to it. My favorite? Real Simple.

    Happy Tuesday- Michele/ivy

  • The fries look great! It is only 7AM,but I wish I had some right now!

  • Someone gave me that potato recipe years ago and it’s a family favorite.

I love Mary Englebreit’s magazine. I feel like I know her. Her son’s name is the same as my son Evan. I feel very sad that she has lost her publisher but perhaps like Victoria magazine (one of my other faves) it will rise from the ashes.

  • That was totally my favorite magazine…the only one I’d ever actually read and then re-read! I hated to hear that she lost her publisher, but last I read, she was hoping to find another. I certainly hope she does!!!

Your fries look yummy…I think I’ll try them this way later this week :)

  • Hi, Lynn,
Sorry to hear about your favorite mag. While I’ve seen it here and there, I really don’t have a favorite. I decided that this year I’m not going to renew any of my subscriptions. I usually get Good Housekeeping or Family Circle. The reason being that once I flip through it with a cup of coffee I very rarely go back and really read it. I then spend the next two or three weeks moving it from spot to spot with the intention of honestly reading but never doing it.
As for your potato recipe, I’m definitely going to try it – my hubby loves potatoes!
    Thanks,
    Liane

Thanks for the recipe! Those potatoes look delicious! Bummer about the magazine not being published anymore.

  • I have never heard of this magazine. I do however remember when my favorite magazine ~ Victoria~ stopped publishing. Wonderfully, it has now been available again for about a year. sigh.

    Those fries look quite tasty!

    Hi Lynn,
I am a friend of Ken and Lorena Chapman and I live in Oregon. I found your blog through a link from Ken this am about your fries :-) I have made the fries for a long time, starting when my husband had open heart surgery and had to limit our fats. I cut them and put them in ice water for 10 minutes, dry them and add very little olive oil….they are still yummmy! I was thrilled to see you love Mary Engelbreit’s magazines. I also have a little desktop calendar every year that I resuse as greeting cards. And I adore Tasha Tudor. I have many books of hers and her children plus some about her. I fell in love with her when I saw her walking barefoot out in the garden. A friend painted me a large picture of her porch and plants. Thanks for sharing. JoAnn

JoAnn, thank you so much for coming by and leaving a comment. It’s nice to “meet” you. I have a few Tasha books, but I want MORE!
