Looking Ahead This Morning
Written by on February 16th, 2009Just for you, more pictures of the garden from Saturday. It was a lovely weekend here, even if a bit chilly. Tonight it’s supposed to be even colder.
That’s okay. It’s February. (And you thought I didn’t know what month it was.)

Last night I did a bit of planning in the school planners. We’ve got 17 weeks left in our school year. We’ll be doing our annual testing in about 12 weeks. A couple of those weeks will be a spring break for us.
What does all of this mean? This school year will be over before I know it!

Next year Princess of the Universe will start Beyond Five In A Row, which I am very excited about. In this house, I don’t think we ever fully get away from Five In A Row, but formally she’ll be doing Beyond. We have several more Five In A Row Volume 4 titles I want to “row” before this school year is over. The one up next?
It fits in perfectly right now, actually. After reading about Ovid and looking at mythology, what better place to go than Rome? We’ll have to pull out Papa Piccolo for review, of course, and try our hand at drawing cats and birds. There is more reading I want to do from mythology and we’ll be reading more from Famous Men of Rome.

As far as gardening this year, I really want to ExPaNd and have FuN with it. (Like I don’t say THAT every year.) In the past we’ve enjoyed garden plans for children by Sharon Lovejoy, whose writing I adore, by the way.

Awwwww. They’re sisters, after all.

The hellebores are pretty. You have to get down on the ground and really appreciate them. I know I do! You would do that with me if you were here, right?

More daffodils.
Lest you think I have forgotten about school work for my sweet boy Joseph, I have goals for him too: Spell whatever word you like. I know you can do it.
We are working on spelling, spelling, spelling.
Make the most of this day.
Lynn

Dear Lynn,
What lovely hellebores! And pretty daffodils, and sweet kitties, and funny lady in the gazing globe.
I can’t wait for our Five in a Row book to come, to add some spice to our eclectic schooling style. Right now the girls are playing with plastic dinosaurs my mom brought out over the weekend (They have them all divided into families, and have made sure to keep the carnivores separate from the herbivores. I think they’re doing “school” with them.)
Our spelling could use some work, too, which is what I’d better get working on, it looks like!
Love,
Marqueta

Lynn,
I love seeing your gardening pictures! Gardening is one of my joys in life. My hellebores are beginning, violets, but I think we are a little behind you weather wise. It is still pretty cold here at night. Soon I will get the grasses cut back and the ferns cut in time for the new growth. I am hoping to get my primroses planted in the front under the bay window as soon as they come in the stores. They always make me feel happy and eager for spring
I wondered if you have read MY ANTONIA by Willa Cather? It is a delightful book of the 1900’s in Nebraska. JoAnn

Lynn,
Your pics are such an inspiration to me. I was thinking of them Saturday as we had a warmish day in RI. I was telling my DD of your buds and blooms. She opened her bedroom window to ‘air things out’ and we’re itching to do some spring cleaning.
Thank you so much for sharing!

Lynn,
The pictures are wonderful!
I especially like the gazing ball!
It reminds me of a quote I read. Don’t remember where I read it or who said it but it fits. Probably because of your creativity, talent in the garden, and of course your obvious sense of humor!
“Forget what you heard about green thumbs. A gardener’s greatest asset is a fertile imagination. How else could we envision Eden in a single seed or paradise in a clay pot!”
Spring Ahead!

The garden pictures are wonderful but I must admit I am a wee bit jealousy.
Most of our snow melted away this last weekend a few patches still remain.
However, I know that old man winter and his snowy breath shall return.
Therefore, my flowerbeds stay asleep.
I love Sharon Lovejoy,
thank you for the link. Many years ago we made a vine teepee with a sunflower hallway leading up to it, if I recall correctly I got the idea from one of her books.…

Love your Blog! Whenever I need a “pick me up” I come here!
Here are two additional books that we used when we rowed Angelo. Both are set in Venice
Gabriella’s Song by Candace Fleming (I love the way this book makes me feel after I read it!)
There’s a Dolphin in the Grand Canal by John Bemelmans Marciano (a fun book, it’s worth the fun! Great watercolors of daily life in Venice)

Marqueta, thank you. We had fun reading Angelo today and doing some work from Volume 4. I really enjoy FIAR.
JoAnn, thank you. I have not read that book, but I’ll look for it when we go to the library again. Thanks for the recommendation.
Liane, spring is not far away! We must take heart! I am glad my pictures encourage you. It was pretty chilly here today, but did warm up enough for me to go out and poke around a bit.
Susan, spring will be here soon! I cannot believe you have been working at the vet’s that long! Uh, are we getting old? You always did love animals. I still remember Binky and Sam and Suzy.
Kari, thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! Your first baby wow! That’s SO exciting! Best wishes to you.
Diane, I love that quote. That’s true, I do believe!
Louise, spring WILL be here before we know it. Did you take a peek at Sharon’s blog? She has pictures of her home and thrift finds, etc. I was so inspired! I love the pictures of her laundry room. If only…
Teresa, thank you so much for your kind compliment. I have made a note of the books and will have my son look for them when he goes to the library tomorrow! We really enjoyed reading Angelo today.

Also forgot to mention that I saw that on the Martha Stewart show for 2/18, she will be making doll furniture w/cardboard.
