One of my favorite things about homeschooling: snuggling on the couch with a read-aloud. Today we read about the Panama Canal.

Princess of the Universe promised me she was actually listening, and not just snuggled into a little tiny ball underneath a throw from Great-Grandma and thinking about dolls or treehouses or something.
The book we are reading is The Panama Canal: The Story of how a jungle was conquered and the world made smaller (Wonders of the World Book). (That’s my Amazon link where you can read more about the book.) I’ve enjoyed what I’ve read from the book so far. We’re almost done with it. As much as I enjoyed reading the book itself, I enjoyed reading the reviews it got on Amazon. At least one professional does not agree with some of the information in the book. It’s nice to have several perspectives as we continue to read.
The Panama Canal. Interesting stuff, that. There were about a thousand rabbit trails we could have headed off on with this book. Yellow fever, malaria, US presidents, piracy, trade, the Incas, and foreign relations are just a few.
While we were all gathered around the map of Panama, North America and South America, I looked at Joseph and said very seriously, “we need to learn more about anatomy.”
He looked at me with a big question mark in his eyes.
I looked at him like DUH, we do, and don’t question me child, tomorrow’s our tax deadline.
Then he said, “Mom, do you mean we need to learn more about geography??”
Sheepish grin.
Yeah. Geography.

That is a beautiful, cozy picture!
Read Aloud Time is a favorite in our house too. Your picture reminded me of our family time. My daughter and I sit in almost the same position.
anatomy.. geography… what’s the diff, right?;)
you girls look so comfy-cozy♥
That was great Lynn! ha! We love read aloud time too. We can spend a lot of time that way even with four kids one of whom is a 3yo boy!

Great post! Reading aloud is the very best part of homeschool for us. We still do a TON of it (we are waiting for my sister to give us “Outliers” so we can start in again and we have a novel due in July that is still not in publication).
Dear Lynn,
What a cozy picture you make! Your jumper looks like my apron!
Anatomy and geography, same thing.
Love,
Marqueta
Michelle, thank you! I like for school to always be cozy.
Cora, it’s the best way ever to read a book!
Diane, I was thinking the same thing. Obviously.
Heather, I think I’m a bit busy in the mind, don’t you?
Ken, I always enjoy reading about what you all have been reading.
Marqueta, thank you! That jumper is one of my favs right now!
Lynn
I particularly love this post!
Thanks, Rachel!
