It’s A Jungle Out There

Written by admin on May 9th, 2009

After several days of much-needed rain over the past week or so, I walked out this morning to a real little jungle.

Oh, I love it.  There is so much in this little spot — insects, brown snakes, spiders, birds, the goldfish pond; it’s a homeschooler’s paradise!

And yet, I have to maintain some sort of order so that the mint doesn’t choke out the lavender and the rue doesn’t totally hide the Jupiter’s beard.  You know, stuff like that.

I made notes of the delicate plants that need for me to give them some room by weeding out around them.  I made note of some mistakes I planted and I will set to pulling them out (again) some day soon.

Funny how mistakes keep coming back.  And just as we’ll always have plenty of loud and agressive people to run into in life, so it is with plants in their plant world.  There are plenty of agressive, squeaky-wheeled plants.

The lessons to be learned in a garden: it would take more than a lifetime.

It’s a work day for me today, but a morning stroll through the garden gives me things to think about and be thankful for.

A close up view of this pretty Iris Fairy Cottage.  Imagine living in that splendor.   Can’t you just picture her?  The garden fairy, sitting inside on bent knees, sipping from a little thyme leaf full of rain water.

I spotted several praying mantises this morning.  They are brave little creatures, not easily scared away unless you actually make a move towards them with your hand.

Yes, a little jungle from end to end.  Dare I even think of putting more beds up the sides of the house when all this chaos is going on in front?  But I need more beds.  Hear me?  I need them.

The insects need them.  Our homeschool needs them.  It’ll be alright.

    Dear Lynn,

Ah, yes, more beds and more shelves! Could there ever be enough? The praying mantis reminds me of the big one I had on my head last year, unbeknownst to me. AnnaMarie’s eyes were “out on sticks”, trying to tell me what was on my head!

    Love,

Your yard is amazing – and all that you do in it. I love the care with which you take in it too. You could probably have a field day in my yard. It misses having my sweet friend with a green thumb next door as we all know my thumb is brown.

    Hugs to you!

It’s a beautiful, peaceful jungle. *happy sigh* Love your garden, Lynn. Hope your Mother’s Day was beautiful and resting.
