Preparing for the School Year

Today I’m doing some cleaning out, going through books, making some schedules, and trying to get us prepared for the uncoming school year.

I look around and think to myself, you’ve got to be brutal when dealing with the clutter this year.

Michaela and I have been talking about homeschooling versus public schooling.  Remember, it’s been a transition year for her, and even when a change is exciting and fun, it’s not always 100% easy.

I love my fried green tomatoes.

If we are to enjoy the school year and really accomplish great things with our Ambleside Online, I need to be organized and have a plan.  The plan is coming together as I read and underline and print out lesson plans from Ambleside.

I am hopeful that some co-ops I am working towards will come together for us, and there are various lessons that Michaela is interested in taking.  Shuffling clutter from one room to another does not seem like something that should consume my t ime.  ;)

I also know that I need to have lists of chores for myself and the children so that the home can stay orderly, and we need to have routines for my workdays and routines for my off days.  I think that my work days would be good days for Michaela to do assigned reading from her Ambleside curriculum.

What do you do with large, empty vegetable cans?

I hope you enjoy your day.  We had a lot of much needed rain last night.  I’m glad, because Hubby would work all day and then come home and start watering the garden.  He needs to rest.  The garden is gray and soaking wet.  It’s a good day to stay inside and clean.  I have a stack of bags ready to fill up for donations to Goodwill.

Happy Thursday!

  • LOL, that last photo is awesome. I sat down and worked out Dyl’s course of study for the year (HIGH SCHOOL!), but we still aren’t starting school for a while, I think I should heal all the way first.

  • I think you and I have been sharing the same mind;) I am so sick of the clutter and piles of *stuff*. I just feel like I have too much *stuff!* I have this deep desire to weed out and clear out to choose to have fewer things, to only have things I really love, and not waste time and energy on things that don’t really matter to me. The girls are off to their grandparents for a few days and the littles are going to their father’s overnight on Friday, so I will be filling bags for Goodwill while they are gone. I hope I can get lots done! Starting the new school year always puts me in a nesting sort of mood;)

  • Dear Lynn,

I am definitely feeling the need to purge, too! The abundance of material things is a curse to us creative-types, isn’t it? :)

I hope you can get a good schedule worked out, that will be easy to stick to.

Oh, and I love the Romper Stompers~we’ve been playing with smaller versions here, too!

    Love,

    Marqueta

  • I am just going to pretend that school isn’t starting yet this year!!! Can’t I??? NO, I love homeschooling but this year I am waiting until the last minute it seems…:)))

  • That is so funny! I’m making fried green tomatoes for the first time this week!

I went over and browsed Ambleside Online. That is a pretty amazing resource. As you know, we used Sonlight, but if I would have known about this, it might have given me pause. I think it is quite well suited for exactly the kind of homeschool we did where we made schedules for which the kids were responsible during the day. A commend you on your choice and even more so that you found this!

  • Yes, Sheri, you take care of you right now. I’ve had seasons where school had to wait for a little while, or at least take it slow.

Diane, it seems that you and I are often thinking of the same things!! :) I’ve really gotten rid of a lot of clutter and a lot of “twaddle” over the last few days.

Marqueta, I used to make Romper Stompers too. :) Yes, clutter hampers creativity to a large degree, but my problem is saving TOO many things to try and be creative with later.

Tonya, I’m so excited about Ambleside, I’m excited to start school, but I’m a bit startled at how quickly summer is flying away and I need to have my plans in place!!

Notes from the Frugal Trenches, good to hear from you! I love fried green tomatoes!

Ken, it is indeed an amazing resource. I am learning SO much. I had heard of it and looked at it a few years back, but the timing was not right for us in any way, i.e. illness, not homeschooling Michaela, etc. This year it seems a perfect fit and I am trusting that it will be.
