Dear Stephanie,

Thanks so much for your comment! Sorry it took me a few days to respond. You are right that it's a long road. Though I feel 100% better now, I still have days where I stop in the middle of a store and just think -- why do I feel so weird? Or totally zone out and feel like my brain won't work. I used to panic, but now I think, oh yeah, my thyroid again...

I will look into Natural Calm with my doctor/P.A. They are really into anything that will help and they do so much research. Isn't it wonderful to have a doctor who listens and does not just look at lab work? One of the best doctors I ever worked for would ask the patient, but how to YOU FEEL??

Anyway, thanks for sharing your information on the thyroid meds and the natural calm.

I just found your blog today in a search for homeschool blogs. How amazing that we would have more than homeschool in common. I as well have Hashimotos. I have been treated for 1 year now. prior to that I spent nearly 3 years trying to find a doctor who would listen. it was very frustrating. I now am treated by a holistic doctor 3 hours from home. She discovered the Hashimotos and started treatment promptly. I am currently taking synthroid and armour thyroid together. I also lead a gluten free and casein free life. i have been dairy free for a year because it showed up on my allergy panels. The gluten did not but after 6 months without much improvement I felt I needed to go gluten free as well. My doctor applauded the idea. Also... my previous doctor had me taking synthroid. My levels always tested normal, but I felt horrible. further testing by my current doctor found that my levels were not actually normal. Definitely keep an eye on those numbers. I take selenium as well. My itchy rash has gone away. my hair is thickening up (if only slightly). My migraines have nearly gone. One other thing I take is Natural Calm... it helps with the thyroiditis attacks that cause the contant thinking and inability to sleep (that sometimes comes with hashimotos). This Hashimotos road is long and dreary sometimes, but I am determined to make the best of it. It sounds as though you are too! I will be checking back here to track your progress. Thanks!

Thanks Karla. It has not been a cureall for me, but my eczema has come under control and I do feel better when I leave gluten off. :)

Best wishes!

Shawn, I had noticed that about Tension Tamer myself, but thank you so much for putting that information here. It's true. I switch teas a lot and have lately been drinking a lot of Earl Gray -- regular and decaf, along with sleepy time and some other herbal teas. I hope your wife does well! I wish you the best. My recent ultrasound came back okay -- no nodules, etc, but it's something we'll be watching!

Hey, Lynn -

I came across your website while searchig for info on which foods should be avoided if someone has Hashi's. My wife (32) was recently diagnosed w/ this lovely disease, & was also found to have a solitary, 4mm nodule (w/ rim calcification) on the left lobe (FNA in the very near future - after watching some being performed on Youtube she's really excited about the procedure.) The reason for the post was just to mention a couple of things. First, my wife also loves Tension Tamer (she discovered it several months ago & is good for at least 2 cups a day). Second, she was just recently informed that it contains licorice, which apparently makes your thyroid & adrenals go a bit crazy (the literature I've read is fairly vague.) Obviously, there couldn't be a huge amount of it in a packet of tea, but who knows how much is too much when dealing w/ Hashi's. Just something else to worry about ingesting! Awesome blog. Be safe & stay healthy.

Glad you are doing better.

I wanted to say that synthetic T4 medications(levothyroxine, etc.) do not replace all that your thyroid makes. Most people need an addition of T3 to the T4 in synthetic.

I, too, have Hashi's. I did the T4 only for 20 years. Initially, I did well but after a few years, I crashed bad! It wasn't until 3 years ago that I found out about natural desicated thyroid (Armour, NatureThroid, etc.). The difference is amazing!

A good website to look at is Stop the Thyroid Madness. I found this site years ago and it is packed with information!

I wish you all the best with your healing!
