Lu, I can so relate to your post. I have Hashimoto's and 3 other auto immune diseases all since about the age of 8. I've been gluten free and primarily dairy free for at least 2 years now. I have a blog of my own and I encourage you to check it out: http://autoimmunebattle.blogspot.com/

I wish you all the best in your quest for wellness.
Take care.

Lu, thank you so much for your comment. Thyroid disease is just impossible to describe to anyone. I have had moments where I felt like I was losing my mind, and I know it is related to my thyroid. Moments of panic. Moments of not being able to think. It is just hard to accept sometimes. I need to post an update on my current state as far as dealing with my thyroid. It can be so overwhelming, trying to remember what I am really supposed to be taking. Both of my doctors have said that I need at least 2000 IUs of D a day, and I even forget that sometimes, but then I feel horrible when my vitamin D plunges. Anyway... Will try to opst something soon! xoxo

Hello Lynn,
I am from Mexico and I came across your blog after doing research on Hashimoto's disease.
I was diagnosed with this 4 months ago and it became a living hell. This got on my nerves and I had all the nervous symptoms you can imagine. I bought Dr. Claire Weekes' book, Hope and help for your Nerves and it did help me a lot on how to understand my symptoms and not believe I was going to die. I take 25mg of Levothyroxine every morning and after 4 months, I feel good but not the way I used to feel. Thank God I have a new job that is less stressful, otherwise I don't know what I would've done.
I feel tired most of the time, I struggle to do things that I like, I stress easily, I hate being sleepy and I hate being anxious. I worked as a Guest Service manager for 5 years and stress never did a thing to me. I've come to understand that it's the disease, but it's terrible. However, this has given me hope. I've already had my dosage of Vitamin B and I take Vitamin E at night, but it's good to read that you're taking more supplements.
I know someone else that was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and she's had the worst.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I hope you can post soon.

Hi Lynn! I have come across your blog once again and realized I had commented previously! After reading it all the way through again, I have a few questions for you!

Firstly, my TSH is currently down to 1.39, the lowest ever, on 88mcg of levothyroxine, but my antibodies are at 900. I have a new endocrinologist who is wonderful, thank goodness. My ultimate goal here is to get pregnant and keep the pregnancy, and I'm having some wretched fertility issues right now. Not sure if they are thyroid related or not.

You mentioned no more green tea. It's so complicated, because when trying to get pregnant, they say to drink green tea. Not to mention how apparently good for you it is, so I have been drinking a glass of decaf green tea a day. But I'm intrigued by you cutting it out and drinking that Tension Tamer tea. How did you end up finding out that green tea was bad for the thyroid? I may need to make some tea adjustments myself...

Also, B vitamins. I take a multivitamin that has 4.5 mcg of B1, 5.1 mcg of B2, 20 mcg of B3, 6 mc of B6, and 18 mcg of B12. Is that comparable to what you take?

Lastly - regarding going gluten free: I am so on the fence about my food issues. I went gluten-free for about a month. I did feel way less bloated and uncomfortable in the stomach after meals. However, I had my allergist test me for gluten and cow's milk, and they both were negative. I believe I probably have an intolerance to gluten and dairy - but only in certain amounts. The problem is, I can't figure out how much I can have before I have an upset stomach! I also have IBS and crazy hives, which I've always attributed to my thyroid. It's just so hard to stay gluten-free when the tests have come back negative and I can't tell what symptoms go with what! Dairy and sugar bother me as well, in large doses. It's so complicated! I find this whole diet thing really tough, so more power to you!

Thank you for posting a link to my blog, I really appreciate it! May I ask you a blog question - right now my blog is public, but very few people know about it, except close friends. How did you get your blog to be so public? I would love the kind of feedback on mine that you get on yours - great job!!

Janet, I know I had some shedding because I have shorter hairs now mixed in with the longer ones, but I am not sure if it was the hypothyroidism or the levothyroxine. I tend to think it was the hypothyroidism. I have recently had my dosage increased every so slightly (one tablet more per week, split over two days) and my hair seems to be growing well. It is a worrisome thing, I know, as I love having my hair long. I am thankful to have had minimal side effects in this area and count it a blessing!

Thanks for your comment!

Came across your website looking for info on Hashimotos. I was diagnosed some years ago but so far have avoided Synthroid, but it's looking inevitable that I must take it sooner or later. I am afraid it will cause hair loss and have read about this and other bad side effects. I want to believe it will be okay with minimal side effects. I see from your pictures you have amazing hair, did you see/feel any difference to your hair? Did Synthroid make you feel better?
Thanks,
Kind Regards,
Janet

Megan, best wishes to you! I am glad to share what has helped me. I always like to underscore the fact that my supplements were doctor prescribed. I can say that I felt almost immediate improvement, though, with getting my vitamin levels back up again. It's still up and down, but I just keep on trying! Again, best wishes and thanks for the link and the comment!! Lynn

I just want to thank all of you for this wonderful advice! I have recently started trying to get pregnant, only to find out a few weeks ago that my TSH levels (I have Hashimoto's as well) are too high, and I've been forced to stop trying! I'm dying to find out what I can do to lower them and be healthier, not just wait around for the Synthroid to kick in! I'm considering a major dietary change and was so happy to find out that I'm not the only one in this boat.

I'm going to mention this blog in my own blog (http://futuresupermom.wordpress.com), which is about my journey to conceive while living with Hashimoto's. Thanks again!! - Megan
