Happy? No, I said “appy”
By Lynn, on March 5th, 2010
- On Wednesday, I was happily preparing for yesterday’s co-op.
- Including 10 pounds of mashed potatoes, all ready for a study of Idaho.
- Some time during the day The Carpenter called home saying his stomach was hurting.
- Co-op preparation continued, but with a faint question mark hovering around in my mind. Stomach pain? Bad stomach pain?
- Another phone call. Stomach pain is worse.
- Late Wednesday evening I know that I’ll either: a) enjoy a well-prepared-for co-op come Thursday, or b) head out in the dark night to the ER.
- We chose the ER.
- At around 6 a.m. Thursday morning The Carpenter was being wheeled into the OR with an acute appendicitis.
So I’ve been holding down the fort (thank goodness for my boys) and visiting Thomas as much as possible, sketching and dreaming of spring while he sleeps, recovering.

I won’t share gory details, but let’s just say we were at the 24-hour mark from the onset of pain, where you might see rupture or gangrene and, in the surgeon’s words, getting Thomas’s appendix out was “a challenge.”

About Lynn
I am the mother of four delightful children: a 23-year-old son, a 20-year-old son, a 17-year-old son, and a bright and bubbly 13-year-old daughter. I share an apartment home with my 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. My little home on the internet is called Rose Cottage because of my love for gardening, roses, and all things romantic and Victorian. Welcome.
I'm a North Carolina girl and I love sharing North Carolina links and information. I do medical transcription from home. My hobbies include making sweet little dolls from clay who are named and have their own stories to tell. I also make old-fashioned brooches. These are for sale in my Etsy shop.
For 13 years continuously, I homeschooled some or all of our four children, but the time came that our homeschool had to be closed. It was the end of a beautiful chapter in my life. I will always be a strong supporter of homeschooling and I will continue to review books and maintain my homeschool website, The Healthy Homeschool.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.

Praying for all to go well! I know how those hospital stays mess with life.
Good lesson for me that you never know what the day will bring, Lynn.
Sure hope the recovery goes smoothly for Carpenter and take care of yourself as the caregiver.

So sorry your hubby is having to go through this. But so glad you went on to the ER. Keep us updated.
Oh Lynn! Thank God you were able to get your DH into the ER when you did. We just never know what a day holds. It makes me grin just a bit picturing you with ALL those taters. (remember the scene of Forest Gump telling all the different ways to prepare shrimp? Was it shrimp? Something…Anyway, remember that litany??) Praying for a complete recovery for DH, and for your family.
Your sketch was whimsical…loved the design and flow of the outfit she wears.
Take extra good care.
Jen B.
Dear Lynn,
Here’s hoping your Hubby has a fast recovery. I will send up a prayer of thanks that you were able to get to the hospital in time to preevent further complications. On another note-How many ways can one prepare mashed potatoes? Potato pancakes, panfried potato patties, sheperd’s pie, potatoe croquettes well there’s four!
Hope you and the Carpenter have a blessed week ahead.
Diane
