Oh, dear readers, I skipped my blog post yesterday, but what can a girl do when she’s having fun out of town (even if the van was being worked on in the meantime?)??
I was able to plunder around in a couple of new thrift stores and also visit some really fun new retails stores! I did think of you all as I shopped about, walking on pretty sidewalks in my old hometown and sipping coffee from a somewhat hippie-ish coffee shop.
Are they not perfect? Just the right amount of heel. The perfect color. Love the fabric around the platform. Ahhh. At any rate, these shoes were purchased NEW from Ross, and I just could not resist. The only pair I saw like these, and they happened to be my size. And, again, I love that they are more of a platform style and less of a severe taper which makes one feel as if they have been on tip-toe all day!
My oh my, I had such a 1940s or 1950s feeling when I got dressed this morning! Like a retro telephone operator! I guess it was the cut of this new thrifted dress with its very narrow, tightly fitted waist. Or was it the stockings? The perfectly prissy shoes?? No, it had to be the up-do with the poufy roll in front!
Love at first sight. And second sight. And third. Worth the money!
One of the reasons I love to get dressed up everyday, for the day, the whole day, is the way I am treated when I am out. By gentlemen. I have found that if I dress like a lady, I tend to get treated like one. I know, I know, on the flip side of that is a topic that no one wants to talk about, and I am the first to say it is never anyone’s own fault to be treated badly. But, just today, I had a gentleman open a door for me. When I said thank you, he nodded and said, “Yes ma’am!” Maybe I sound old fashioned or prudish, but that’s okay! It’s something I want my daughter to know too — like attracts like, and thus the way we carry ourselves and dress ourselves (and walk and talk) will dictate (for the most part) what we are surrounded with and by.
And now, I have two questions for you! First things first.
1 – Would you like to see a video tutorial of this hairstyle?
This hairstyle has a very poufy, rolled-bangs look in the front.
It love it! It is super easy! It is fun!
Just let me know if you want it.
Now, the second question is this.
2 – I have noticed a trend with my blog since I have sort of switched gears ’round here. I am having more traffic but fewer comments. Now, I do not base whether or not I will blog on the number of comments I get. I also do not think a blog should be a popularity contest. Yes, I love comments like the next person, but CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT is what a blog is all about. Based on the number of visitors I have and what is bringing them here, I know I have content. Not saying it’s always so good, but I do have content.
I am wondering if my reader base has changed somewhat due to my no longer homeschooling Michaela and my losing the garden. Bottom line, I am concerned that I am boring my readers. I am not fishing for comments here, so if you are happy, then go about your merry way and day and know I love you. If, on the other hand, you have been wanting to say, “LYNN FOR GOODNESS’ SAKE CHANGE THIS!” would you please let me know?
Ah well. Lunch break is over and I am heading back to the work desk. Oh, yeah, though, before I go:
orange shoes, report, new, Ross, 19.99
dress, ny collection, thrifted, 4.59
stockings, the scrap exchange, 25 cents. yeah.
belt, thrifted, 1.59
blouse, thrifted, 3.39
Oh, and one more thing!! THIS IS WORTH TWO MINUTES! I heard a story in the news about a man who gives free haircuts to veterans. Click on the link to see the very adorable trailer he works from! What a sweet service to offer our veterans!
Never underestimate the power of a haircut.
KIND OF LIKE:
Never underestimate the power of getting up and dressing up nicely in the mornings!

Ah Lynn, I love your blog the way it used to be and the way it is now!
I totally agree about getting up and dressing nicely each day. I had been thinking that maybe I needed to “grow up” and dress like everyone else (tee shirt and jeans). Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it’s just not me.
So anywho, don’t change a thing about your blog!
Great shoes! I’d love to see how you do that hairstyle, so very pretty.
Also, I have deleted my blog, just something I can’t handle at the moment!
Hugs))
Wow! I must say that while I was not fishing for comments, all of your comments have totally MADE MY DAY! I think you really picked up on the fact that I felt like I needed some direction here! True that I have been having a blast with thrift store fashion, I wanted all of us to have a blast!
Dear Laurie, thanks so very much for your words of encouragement! I think you and I like lots of the same styles! I sure enjoyed visiting your blog (albeit I do not have time to do the blog hopping I’d like to do on a daily basis) but I certainly understand. I do hope your daughter is doing okay! Hugs, Lynn
Dear Andrea, thanks so much! Wouldn’t a retro commercial be fun!
And about people being busy, I agree totally with everything you said. I think that’s a large part of all of this process — just having or not having time. Love, Lynn
Dear Hilary, thanks so much!! Will do the hair tutorial soon. I would LOVE for us to go thrift store shopping together! Maybe some day we will get to meet up in person! xoxo
You never know! It could happen! Love, Lynn
Dear Ann, thanks for your comment! I do enjoy getting dressed up, but there are days when I don’t dress up so much. I think it is just that way for all of us. As far as blogging, I sure know how that is — I have had years where I was totally up and down with it all! xoxo Lynn
Dear Evelyn, thanks! And yay for the pins! I am glad you finally got them. Sorry I was like a turtle! It was a lovely project, though, and I still am turning her story over in my mind! Love, Lynn
Dear Lily, I do appreciate your thoughts being with me! I can feel the kindness and care from my friends. It’s a nice thing.
I appreciate your encouragement about the content too. It really can be tough when you’ve gathered a certain type of readers and then life changes! Love, Lynn
Dear Dawn, thanks so very much! I truly appreciate that. As far as the dress thing, that would be tough with that kind of weather! I would probably invest in lots of tights and fun, waterproof/water-resistant boots, sweaters and accessories!
Love, Lynn
Dear Tracy, thank you so much! xoxo Lynn
Dear Michele, yes, we go back a LONG way, don’t we??
And I LOVE your blog! I love dropping in and seeing what vintage things you have found and what you are doing in the garden or in your sweet little school! Thanks! Love, Lynn
Connie, thanks! I have appreciated your visits and your comments so much! I have seen you out there and I appreciate the friendship! Funny how life changes, huh, but sometimes we just follow along and keep reading! Thanks so much! It is true, some days I get nostalgic for a bit of the “old stuff.” xoxoxo Love, Lynn
Sarah, thank you!!!
Frances, thank you so much! And thanks too so much for taking the time to write that quotation out! I love it! I really do. I believe that does strike a chord with me and the way I feel about things! xoxo Love, Lynn
You look lovely! I think you could do a commercial or a movie spot for a retro switchboard operator
It is so true how people treat you according to dress. I rarely dress up and I get shuffled around by salespeople! ha. I don’t mind…I feel I am not going to dress up for shopping. That is a chore for me…now church…I will dress up. It is a sacrifice…I think it takes extra effort to dress up, and less laziness! I believe that when people don’t dress up, it is mostly because of laziness and wanting to be cozy.
I like your newsy blog. Maybe people are just busier right now. I’ve seen several blogs that say they are going on a blog vacation because they need the break. love, andrea
1. Yes please on the tutorial!
2. Yes to what Laurie says above – ‘I love your blog the way it used to be and the way it is now!’
3. A 3rd yes to noticing a difference sometimes in how one is treated when one is a little more dressed up. 95% of the time I run around town in awful exercise clothes, but the days I pop into the grocery store after Sunday morning meeting, etc are the days the doors are held open
4. If we lived on the same side of the country, I would make you take me thrift store shopping & I would make you teach me your secrets to finding beautiful things! And then, to make up for being bossy, I would buy you coffee
Love, Hilary
Lynn,
I enjoy reading your blog. You have given me something to think about today about dressin up. I like dressing more feminine but don’t always do it. I work 4 days a week out of the home and during the winter our company owner is in Florida and we wear jeans in his absence. I am going to have to think more about wearing a dress to work. I’ll wear a dress during the summer with sandals. But even when wearing jeans I’m going to focus accessorizing the outfit.
I think the content of your blog is great. It’s very girly in a decent, respectable way. I like it.
I’ve gone back and forth with my blog not being sure of whether to continue or not.
Ann
Lynn, those are just the cutest shoes I have seen in a long time!! So perfect on you. I owe you an e-mail, but I will just say the pins arrived and I love them all.
Hi Lynn,
I started reading your blog when you still had your garden and as a gardener, I loved it. But I have enjoyed seeing you grow, change, re-discover who you have always been on the inside and re-invent who you are for the days you are living now. You have been very brave and courageous. My prayers have been following you and are still with you even if my comments don’t come too often these days.
Keep finding more of your true and full self and keep your blog current with who you are now. It is wonderful that way and always will be.
Blessing and Love to you,
♥
Lily
Oh – forgot! I love the hair style! I would really like to see how you did it in a video! Thanks for offering!
♥
Lily
Hello Lynn,
When I first came across your blog it was due to being dx with hypothyrodism. Even better you homeschooled and so do I. As with life everything changes. To tell you the truth I am jealous of your dresses and shoes. I do not own one skirt or dress. Really a shame. Maybe it is because I live in Michigan and we just got 6 inches of snow dumped on us. You have an eye for finding the most unique items. I enjoy reading your blog. You truly are an inspiration. Many a day I have read your blog and felt inspired.
Dawn from Michigan
I love youur blog please don’t change a thing
I LOVE YOUR NEW STYLE. I love, LOVe your thrift finds the best. KEEP THEM COMING. I’ve followed your blog for years… and I must say…although I’ve never met you, your new life and seeing all the pictures of you smiling is beautiful.
PLEASE LYNN…… keep your blog rolling… it’s the best.
hi lynn,
if i remember correctly, i came upon your blog a couple years ago from either a comment you made on another blog or just a reference from another blog about your thyroid. at the time, i was wondering if i had thyroid or andrenal gland issues, so i was curious about your thoughts. and the fact that you loved gardening (like me), homeschooled (like me), and lived in an older home (like me) was a bonus! yes, i will admit, there are times i miss the posts from days gone by (like, what ever happened to that fabric rug you were making – i think last time you posted about it, you were still in the process of making it??). i also loved all the fun infusions you made with things from your garden – i now enjoy drinking dandelion tea! i never before would have known about its benefits. but we all have changes going on in our lives and focus on other things. and that’s okay. obvioulsy i’ve still been following you! i care about you as a person, and am happy to read whatever you post.
your friend,
connie
p.s. another hair tutorial would be great!
Those shoes are amazing.
I found your blog when I was searching the Charlotte Mason method of homeschooling and I even found Ambleside Online because you mentioned it. Although I didn’t use it exclusively, I did use some of online books. I’ve always loved your blog. It’s one of the few that I come back to. It’s very interesting, funny and down to earth. I don’t comment much on blogs because after I submit my content I always think I sound stilted and fake when I go back and read it.
A while back I found a quote that I thought described you. I should have shared it then, but I thought it might be too gushy. Aww…who cares? At least I won’t sound fake:
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.”
Daer Lynn,
Just pausing for a moment to catch up on things. I enjoy dropping in on your blog, as often as I can. The thing that is positively essential to your blog, is YOU. Whatever it is that is going on with you, your loyal fans experience with you. Life doesn’t stay constant, but is static. That is true for everyone. Also true for everyone, if one or more of the major pieces of your life puzzle hasn’t shifted, just wait, it will. (is that a promise or a threat?!)
I do love all the health, nutritional paths you’ve covered. The hair tutorials are fabu. Fun thrifty fashion is always welcome.
The final consensus, is you can change whatever you want, as long as YOU don’t go changing. (insert Billy Joel here…’Don’t go changing..’. Great lyrics!)
It would be so very sad if you discontinued your blog. I look forward to visiting, and I know many others do too.
Hugs for your neck,
Jen
P.S. When I started reading your blog, we were both homeschooling. After I was in an accident with a lengthy recovery, it was decided that other arrangements were to be made after all. It really hurt me to let go of that vision for our children’s education. Not that I’m glad you experienced transition, but I am reassured somehow, that life demands us to flex and bend and adjust around the things allowed into our lives. You did that with finesse, and it encourages me to keep on keeping on. Thank you for sharing your heart.
Dear Lynn,
You know that I’ll be friends forever! <3 I love seeing you grow and evolve as a daughter of God, and pray that your blog will always be a great form of therapy for us all.
Love,
Marqueta
Dear Darling Lynn! You are so wonderful in your blogging! I love the changes that you are making and will continue to make. It is good for us to see you evolve and I am in awe of the way you are making your way through this separation and divorce, I did not do half so well, nor with as much spunk! I do miss the garden and tips on teas and infusions etc, but hey, this is real life and I think it is great. I don’t comment every time because I am in a hurry but my heart is there! I love you! Please continue.. Terry
Dear Jen, thanks so much for your very encouraging comment! I appreciate your sharing about your homeschool experience. It means a lot to know that we are not alone sometimes. And I know that hurt you speak of regarding the letting go. Thanks for walking with me through the many different turns in the path I have been on.
Love, Lynn
Dear Marqueta, Thanks so much! I owe you a letter! I loved my beautiful Valentine’s card and bookmark! Love, Lynn
Dear Terry, thank you so much!!
I am not always an oak, even though I may seem like it at times. I have surely had my moments of looking in the mirror and wondering about where in the world I’ve been, what in the world am I doing, and where in the world I am headed! Thanks for your sweet, sweet comment! I know you are there! I love you. xoxo Lynn
ahh, you are so cute!!! i love your style
Mrs. Amber Apple, thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words very much! xoxo Lynn
First I want to jump on a plan and come steal those shoes
Love them, great find!!! I agree, dress like a lady, you will get respect. You know how much I love your style xox Clarice
If you got on a plane and came to see me, Clarice, I would give you the shoes! I would love to meet you!
Thanks so much!! Love, Lynn
Oh my gosh, the shoes!!!! I have serious shoe envy right now!!!! Those are the best shoes ever!
As for the blog… it is fabulous! It was always fabulous! It is a reflection of you and should stay that way. It’s what attracted me to it in the first place and it’s what’s kept me coming back. You are the epitome of class and grace, through all seasons of life. THAT’S why people are coming here and reading… and coming back and reading… and sharing with their friends, who also see what we see.
Lesa, thanks so much for your very kind comment! That means so much. I really appreciate it. Like I have said before, I wonder sometimes who is out there!
And the shoes! They are sure lovely and I was glad to find them.
Lynn
