Around the Feeder Today…Sparrows

The little birdies just amaze me, and lately they have let me get closer and closer to them and take pictures!  Kind of like Mama with her chickens, I think they are learning who feeds them!

I believe these are chipping sparrows.

Aren’t they cute!  I love that hair-do on the left.  I am, however, wondering about that black eye.  The other side of this birdie does not look like that.   It does not look like conjunctivitis, really, but birds can get that.  House finches in North Carolina have had problems with that.  It calls for keeping bird feeders cleaned out regularly.  I think a mild bleach solution is recommended and then rinse and dry thoroughly.  Mine look terrible right now, but they do get cleaned.  It’s been raining here for days, and everything looks yucky.

Here is a great link on cleaning and caring for bird feeders.

  1. Dear Lynn,

So that’s what chipping sparrows look like! We had a tree sparrow on our deck, and from your pictures I’ll be able to tell better when we see a chipping one. :)

    Love,

    Marqueta

p.s. I hope the little guy’s eye gets better, too. Maybe he molted and it just didn’t grow back.

    1. Dear Marqueta, I do believe it is a chipping sparrow. I wondered for a long time and spent quite some time reading. If you find that I am not correct, please let me know!! I wonder if the bird is just dark around the eye. Maybe a “beauty mark” or something! :) Love, Lynn
