Making Felt Sets Again

I had taken them down for awhile, but I have put my felt pages back up.  We’ll see how this goes for me.  I have requested at work to go from a 5-day to a 4-day week.  I really need more time at home.  I hope this will work out for me.

Anyway, the felt pages advertise the felt sets that I make.  It’s fun to have something to work on inside when the weather is cold outside.

My desk is a cozy little spot.  In the window you can see the bowl full of bread crumbs and seeds (brought home from the bread slicer at work) to feed the birds.  I love to watch the birds while I work.  I love to see the sun come fully up as I sit here in the morning with my coffee.

I have started on some starter sets.  I want to make up more go-along sets for “rowers” as well.

Red-headed Felt Doll

Well, I call her a doll, she’s really  just a girl.  :)

Isn’t she cute in her coat and hat?

Felt ABC Book

This is an ABC book I am working on.  It helps with a multisensory approach to learning the ABCs.  The book opens up to make room for play with other felt pieces as well.

Here is a picture of the book open.

A Sweet Bunny

Just wanted to share the little felt bunny I made for a preschool set I am working on:

Isn’t he adorable??  He looks like he could hop away.  :)

Thrift Store Sweater Hunt Today

Did you know you can turn old wool sweaters into felt?  Why yes, you can!  I am off to the thrift stores today to look for wonderful old things that people don’t want, including dry-clean-only wool sweaters, so that I can come home and felt them!  Expect pictures soon.

Happy Friday!!

Teaching the Multisensory Way

When it comes to children with learning disabilities, a word that is frequently thrown around the room these days is “multisensory.”  A child with LD may not learn with a traditional visual or audio approach, so a more “multidisciplinary” approach may be necessary.  This includes touch and maybe even acting things out in order for the child to retain important things like letters and blended sounds, etc.

It’s one reason felt playsets are so popular with teachers and parents alike.  Felt definitely has a feel to it:  soft, sometimes bordering on scratchy, even.  When a child acts out stories with felts, something bigger than just play is happening.  Learning is happening!

One thing I suggest is allowing a child to play with a go-along felt set while listening to a book for learning.   For example, your child could use felt figures to depict children playing in the snow while you read The Snow Day.

~my fascinating introduction~

I have been on line WAY too long today, but, oh well, I’ll go ahead and put my first post on my new blog.

I’ll try to make my babbling here most fascinating, though I will be talking about children, felt playsets, mosaics, gardening, life, marriage and homeschooling.   ~:-D

As far as I have been able to determine, it doesn’t get any better than this!
