Adding The Color Green

I have been trying really hard to add more green to my diet.  Actually quite a bit more, say, oh, two or three times a day.  I do this with the awareness that some greens contain quite a bit of vitamin K, so if you are a heart patient or on blood thinners, that would be something to be aware of as blood thinners cause, well, thinning, and then vitamin K helps with clotting.  The two do not necessarily mix!

Lovely, no?  I think it’s beautiful!  Some juices are sweeter, and my children tend to like those better.  Not really sweet, mind you, but with more a predominance of carrots and apples versus this heavier cabbage taste.

Michaela and I watched a movie together called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.  It was centered around one man, and then two or three other people, who took on the challenge to go on a juice fast (after a doctor visit, of course), and how much weight they lost (one man started at over 400 pounds) and how they came off prescription medications and had autoimmune diseases disappear.  Now, Michaela and I are not going on a fast right now.  It is not practical at the moment.  But we are drinking more juice.  Personally, it thrills me that Michaela is taking an interest in health.  She is the one who wanted to watch the move to start with.

Oh, and I can say that adding the color green to your DIET seems to be very good as far as adding some spark to your WARDROBE!  I guess there is nothing as slimming as eating more fruits and veggies and cutting back on the buttery, dairy-laden meat  and carb dishes!

It goes without saying (but I will say it anyway), the other best weapon against that awful old waist fat is exercise.  It’s been hard for me to get to the gym lately, not just because of time but if someone changes the door code and you don’t know about it and are lazy about finding out the new one, well there you go.

I have the gym code now and I could and will go, but little Annie has been looking at me so pitifully lately, I decided to try walking outside more, Annie in tow, and alternating walking and running with her.  She loves it!

Finally, in FINANCIAL NEWS (ha ha) I wanted to talk about the concept of Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do!   For now, my black leather cowboy boots are in the closet and hopefully I will resole them one day.  In the meantime, I have these tall Sam and Libby black boots that I will apply the Make It Do and Wear It Out concept to!

Tall boots like this seem to be in style anyway and I think these boots have a few more miles left in them!

I am learning lots of lessons about money in my new life.  Not necessarily things I did not already know, but things that I guess are more real when it’s just you.  It is in that spirit that I am making do with several things (not just tall boots) that I am not that crazy about.  Now, I am crazy about these boots, but I have a face cream that I spent a pretty penny for and then did not like the way it feels.  It’s sort of waxy feeling to me, but it is all natural, from Whole Foods.  I have found that if I put a few drops of almond oil in with it, it feels 1000 times better!  And my fair, freckled skin LOVES oil.  It makes me feel good to apply the Use It Up concept to this face cream that has some lovely ingredients in it but did not end up being what I thought it would be!

Finally, THE ALICE TREE.  Nothing to post today, except we are on the last chapter today:  ALICE’S EVIDENCE.  And tomorrow, Thursday, has been declared a catch-up-on-ornaments day, and then we’ll post final Alice Tree pictures on probably Friday!  :)   Stay tuned!!

Whole Foods and The Little Wild Garden

My dear readers, I was thankful for lovely words in my mind upon getting up this morning.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there by any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  (Phil 4:8)

Yesterday the weather here was really nice.

I took a walk in The Little Wild Garden.  I admired Faithful, our dogwood, realizing that I have not journaled about her again and that I need to.  Coming soon to a blog near you.

Much to my delight, there were snowdrops in bloom around the goldfish pond.  Aren’t they sweet little flowers!  I wandered over to see if the hellebores showed any signs of blooming.  There is new growth, but no sign of a bloom yet.

The sun was so bright!  The air was warm enough to turn the fountain on for the goldfish.  My goldfish pond does not have a heater, so if it’s too cold (think ice) I can’t turn the pump on to run the water that climbs up through the fountain and runs back down.  I do love that splashing sound.

The birdseed fills the feeder that hangs, of course, from Faithful’s branches.  (Note to self:  Journal soon about your dogwood. )   The birds make me happy while I’m typing.

I consoled myself (over the fact that here it is cold February, which sometimes can get a person down) knowing that there will soon be daffodils in bloom in The Little Wild Garden.  The little neighbor girls will ask if they can have one. 

I’ll say, “Yes, take two.” 

They’ll make us all very happy.

Finally, friends, it is quite the chore keeping enough food for a crowd.  Remind me.  Is six a crowd?  I thought so.

Anyway, I’ve been buying the organic broccoli that’s on sale locally and keeping it cut up for dipping in Newman’s Own Ranch Dressing (I could drink that stuff).  I hate throwing out the broccoli stems, and yet they are rather tough and not as delicious as the crowns for dipping.  I decided to cut them into chunks and then run them through the food processor with some sweet onion.   Used in a recipe I have for broccoli quiche, with venison sausage, oh my did it turn out lovely!  I went ahead and made four of them, because three boys gathered around the table can eat one whole quiche as a “snack.”

Broccoli Quiche – Meant to make one deep dish quiche

Pastry or shell for deep dish pie shell
1 to 1-1/3 cups half and half (I use 2% milk)
6 oz sharp cheddar cheese, grated
4 oz swiss cheese, grated
6 eggs, beaten until frothy
1 bunch fresh broccoli — steamed and chopped
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/2 cup chopped cooked meat (in my case, venison sausage)

Combine all ingredients.  Pour into uncooked pie shell(s).  Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until done. 

Now, I doubled this recipe, using only 12 eggs, 2-2/3 cups of milk, only cheddar cheese (no swiss)–and probably more of it than called for as far as cheese in total, and lots of venison sausage.  It came out fine.  I made four regular pie crust sized quiches (not four deep dish).   The point is, I think this recipe can be altered quite a bit.  You just need to have enough egg (and milk/moisture) to hold whatever else you’re putting in.  Twelve eggs for four regular pie crusts worked out well, but I did have the added moisture of probably a cup and a half of broccoli and sweet onion for two of them. 

Anyway, I am thankful today for food and the fact that I can easily walk, even, to a local fresh market and get good things.

I’m working on my goal to have 10 new things in the shop by the end of the day.

Mocha Frappes

First of all, I had quit drinking coffee. And I had been really good at staying away from coffee, if I may say so myself! I first quit coffee a couple (maybe 3 now) years back when I had a breast biopsy that, thankfully, turned out to be benign. It was during the time without coffee, however, that my thyroid failed.  So I started thinking, perhaps moderation is the key in all things. I have always, since I was young, LOVED coffee. I easily gave it up because my concern about the dangers of it outweighed my desire to have a cup at a certain time in my life. In the past few months, though, I’ve started enjoying a coffee now and then and I feel all the better happier for it. There’s even news these days about the benefits of coffee, so with moderation I’m enjoying coffee again.

I’m not sure I needed to say all that just to tell you I’m addicted to mocha frappes, but anyway, it’s out there now.

It was so innocent.  A McDonald’s coupon.  A trip through the drive-thru with Michaela on a fieldtrip day.  Who knew?  After a few days I realized that I could pay off my mortgage early with what I was spending on frappes.  (You see, I let my family taste a frappe too, and now they were all wanting one.  At $2.79 x 6, well, you get the picture.)

On the advice of some on-line friends, I began to make my own!

  • Frozen cubes of coffee (sweeten it to taste before you freeze it)
  • Whole or low-fat milk
  • Chocolate syrup to taste (I like a lot)

Mix in a blender until icy and well mixed.  Pour into a cup.  Top with whipped cream and more chocolate syrup.  Yum.  :)

Moderate in all things, including moderation.

Wild Edibles Make a Good Meal

Last year I was fortunate enough to have a huge stand of lamb’s quarters in my vegetable garden.  I typically have some lamb’s quarters, but last year I had quite a few plants in the vegetable garden, as well as a plant or two that actually reached over 6 feet tall.  The largest ones produced a lot of greens and then I let them go to seed on the perimeter of the vegetable garden. 

This year I was thrilled to see all these little lamb’s quarters plants springing up along the fence of my veggie garden.   Talk about early spring greens!

Also planted in this bed are the vegetables that Michaela planted earlier:  her spinach, turnips, and carrots.  So far everything is growing together wonderfully!  I think, of course, that the bunny droppings mixed into the garden soil have a great deal to do with how well everything’s growing. 

Lately we are harvesting fresh lamb’s quarters every day for greens as one of our vegetables at supper, so the plants are not becoming overwhelmingly tall and crowding other things out.  I do think that at some point soon, as the plants get thicker and do gain more height, I’ll need to thin them, but for now we are just so thrilled that the lamb’s quarters has decided to grace our garden in such abundance!  Once they need to be thinned, the bunnies will love getting what we cannot use, not to mention I’m sure we’ll eat much of what we thin out.

Washing the greens I picked: 

  •  lamb’s quarters
  • a few mustard greens
  • a few spinach leaves
  • dandelion greens

How did I cook them?  First let me say that we had bacon tonight with our supper.  Dearie me, I do know that that’s not the healthiest meat to offer your family, but I cooked one 12-ounce pack of center cut bacon to share between 6 people.  The main thing I wanted from it was about a tablespoon or two of the grease to go in the greens.  You cannot imagine how good they are.  Let me repeat.  You can’t imagine how good they are!  ;)

I put the greens in a large iron skillet, add just a bit of water — 1/2 a cup maybe, and the bacon grease, and put a lid on.  I get it really hot and then simmer for maybe 20 mintes while everything else is cooking.  You can’t imagine how good they are!  Did I say that already? 

Tonight for supper we had rice seasoned with fresh rosemary, oregano, and thyme from the garden in addition to a couple of small wild onions from the yard.  I just put all the herbs in the water that I was going to cook the rice in.  We had pinto beans cooked with chopped onions and rosemary.  We had our mixed greens.  For dessert we had canned peaches.  Oh, and the bacon.  I nearly forgot.

The total cost of this meal was SO reasonable. 

  • greens — mostly lamb’s quarters, so mostly free
  • bacon — 1.90 (buy one get one free)
  • rice — what, about 50 cents?
  • pintos with sweet onion — about 1.00 or 1.50
  • can of peaches — around 1.50

Lamb’s quarters is considered a superlative green.  It has a very mild taste.   It is rich in vitamin A, C, B1, B2, niacin, calcium, potassium, and iron.

Dress Week Comes to an End – Day 6

Hasn’t it been fun?  Well, it has for me, sharing fun thrift store finds and reading all of your very kind comments!  Today will be the last day, and tomorrow a day of rest from this fashion adventure. 

Can you tell whose baby Annie really is?  I love this little puppy, in spite of her, uh, inability to understand that her bathroom is OUTSIDE.  We will get it straight one day, though.

I love the dress pictured above because of the corset-type tie in the front, and there is a repeated exact tie on the back.  Oh, I do love it.

I am closing with just one picture showing the beautiful detail of one of my current favorites, because I think beauty is in the details.  We fall in love with people as we find out their little ways and peculiarities — their details.  Much of interior design is in the details.  There are detail shops for cars.

When I go out shopping, I shop for things that make me happy and that I can make a connection with.  I also shop for functional things, obviously, because I’m buying clothes, but if I have to choose between a drab gray overcoat and a soft pink one with a pretty charm hanging from the zipper tab, guess what?  ;)

Today’s a work day.  It’s snowing here today.  Again.  I told Thomas spring was right around the corner.  ”Six weeks,” I said. 

“Where’d you get that idea?” he asked.

I was picturing the little groundhog and knowing that he had seen his shadow.

Thomas interrupted my beautiful thoughts and said, “You know they’re comparing this winter to only two others like it over the last 100 years.  This winter’s gonna go slam through March.”

Was he kidding?

Oh well.

Feminine and Frugal Dress Friday

I asked my husband one time if he thought I was odd and he said, “You are pleasantly eccentric.”  I had a grandmother who loved hats, scarves, and leopard prints and all sorts of unusual articles of clothing.  I remember when she would come and visit, we always waited in anticipation, wondering what she would have on.  Actually, I sort of love leopard print too, but it has to be just the right thing for me to wear it.  Fair skin and freckles somehow don’t always look great in leopard print.  :)

I love pairing two very lacy tops together.  Having a little bit of lace show through at a collar or neckline or waist is pretty to me, though too much is, well, too much. 

The skirt has a story.  I bought this skirt probably 10 years ago secondhand.  A few years later I was cleaning out to donate some things to a yard sale and my mother saw that skirt in the bag.  She knew I had really loved it and would probably miss it one day, so she pulled it out without telling me and put it up.  She pulled it out again about two years ago and said, “Remember this?”  It was like finding that skirt all over again.  I thanked her for saving this pretty skirt for me.  It’s got two layers to it, has a beautiful floral print and hangs oh so pretty.

Feminine and Frugal Dress Thursday

Oh, the week is flying by!  Tomorrow I’ll be at my work desk, but we won’t think of that today!  No.

What we will think about is making the most of each day.  As I post this fun and sort of frivolous week of fashion, I am not unaware that there is great suffering around the world, and many would love to have any new clothes right now, let alone a large selection purchased at good prices.

So, we must do what we can to help others and we must be all we can in our places.  I fully believe also in Tasha Tudor’s saying that we must “take joy.” 

I would like to thank my photographer, Michaela, for setting the camera on burst and then getting me to twirl, which I’m not very good at, by the way.  I reminded myself of one of those little twirlers in a jewelry box when the wire has gone awry and she spins off balance.  ;)

Finally, the apron was a splurge and was $20.00, more than the rest of the outfit combined, but there’s a story behind it.  I bought it locally, it is handmade and supports someone who crafts and makes things and sells them, and I think that is worthwhile.  :)   So there.

Besides, everyone needs a pretty apron to wear while cooking and cleaning.

Feminine and Frugal Dress Wednesday

Welcome back to the fashion show!  (That was really fun saying that.)

You get to see one of my current favorite shirts and my cluttered kitchen counter all at the same time!  What a day!

Once again I am layering shirts, which is a useful thing to be able to do since I’m so cold-natured.  The skirt for the day is really shiny and crinkly.  I should have gotten a closer picture of the skirt because the hem is trimmed in lace.  It’s really pretty with black boots.  I found it in a store called Rave, in the mall, on a clearance rack for for 5 dollars.  Most things in stores like that don’t work out for me because everything, uh, doesn’t have enough fabric in it, but this skirt and one just like it in brown came home with me.

I thought this picture was worth putting in because you get to see the bright sun.  The snow looked like it had been sprinkled with bright sparkly glitter.  It was so very pretty.  Made me appreciate Snowflake Bentley all over again!

The greenish-teal shirt underneath is the one that I’m really enjoying right now.  The brand is Stamp 10.  I love how the blue in the pin brings out the blue tone in the shirt.  The black shirt I love too, because of the lace in the V neck.  It’s Chaus Organic and looked like it had never been touched when I bought it at Goodwill.

Once again, I’m covered in shawls.  The red plaid shawl was my one new shawl purchase this year.  I’ll try really hard not to buy another one until the big after-winter sales next year.

Feminine and Frugal Dress Monday

It’s time. I’ve been rattling on about sharing a week of feminine and frugal dress and today’s the day to start! This may appeal to some of you, and not at all to some or many of you. I do get e-mails from time to time, however, asking me about my choice to wear dresses. I think dresses are modest, pretty, feminine, and just plain fun!  Getting dressed in the morning should be fun!  Do pants have to always be a not-modest choice? No, I don’t think so.  I believe pants can be modest.  I have a few pairs of overalls for heavy gardening.  The bottom line is that I just feel more at peace in a dress or skirt.

The outfit above includes an oatmeal-colored corduroy skirt made by WilliSmith.  You know me, the always-sleuth.  For this post, I began to search for information about this particular label.  I honestly am not much for labels, though I do take note when I find a high-dollar item for a couple of bucks.  Anyway, in my searching I found this about Willi Smith.  Apparently he died in 1987, if that tells us how old my skirt is.  Or maybe someone continued the label with his name.   The skirt, however, remains in excellent shape and is one of my favorites.  With the cold weather we’ve been having, I paired it with a light teal blue turtleneck sweater and a 100% cotton off-white v-neck sweater.  Black tights, secondhand Sam and Libby boots, and a warm, furry cape kept me warm outside.  Of course I’d be wearing one of my pins, too!

Capes and shawls are my weakness and I rarely find what I’m looking for secondhand.  I usually buy one new one each year, after Christmas when the large department stores put them 50% or more off. 

Tights?  I also have a weakness for tights, leggings and socks, and I also shop for them during the winter’s end department store sales that go on.  I was lucky enough about four years ago to hit the Dollar Tree when they had just gotten a large shipment of very nice, black, cable-knit tights.  I think I bought about 20 pairs!  I am still using some of them!

Bun E. Wabbit Inn II

I feel like sometimes this place should be called Bunny Cottage.  In fact, we may start calling it that.  ;)   Four bunnies are not many compared to the amount of bunnies that some people care for, but four bunnies are a lot compared to many homes!

I wanted to invite you to see the new “rabbit inn” I’ve built over the last few weeks.  I love working with my hands — sawing and nailing, and this newest bunny cage is much more efficient than the first one I built with Princess of the Universe. 

This cage is much roomier and is at the perfect height for visiting with the bunnies and feeding them.  And if you are wondering, yes, that is the neighbor’s cat sitting atop the cage.

He goes by several names, depending on which neighborhood child you ask.  I just call him “kitty kitty.”

He may look like a mountain lion poised for an attack, but he’s really one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever known.  He plays contentedly with Annie, our beagle, and he purrs the moment he gets around anyone.

You may remember that the bunnies were in Michaela’s room for awhile, but that was only a transition for us.  My goal has always been to get them at the back of the vegetable garden.  If I am going to feed them, they may as well be fertilizing the garden.  ;)

It just took some time to get another big cage built.  For the past couple of months they have been on our porch, Coco in a regular storebought cage with her babies, and Basil in the first cage we built.   We wanted them to be getting used to outside weather before being put all the way out at the back of the garden.

Basil’s cage has had some modifications.  We built a little box to go inside and I thought Basil would love getting in that box, but so far he loves sitting ON the box.  I guess he feels more secure, or maybe more important (?), perched up high in his cage. 

My next project?  To built another bunny cage.  Keep in mind that every piece of wood you see in the cages came from the 51 cents bargain bin at Home Depot.  Frugal bunny cages.  I love it.  :)
