Louise at The Pink Gate tagged me for some fun!

1. What are your nicknames?
Hmmm. “Sandra Lynn The Big Fat Hen” comes to mind. I was called that because I was so skinny in elementary school. I loved it.

Well, not having TV, I have no idea! Maybe one where everyone wins a lot of money.
3. What was the first movie you bought in VHS or DVD?
Bambi, for the boys when they were little.
4. What is your favorite scent?
Easy. Lavender from the garden.
5. If you had a million dollars that you could only spend on yourself, what would you do with it?
If it had to be spent on me, a beautiful country house with gardens, the home being decorated in total shabby chic.
6. What one place have you visited that you can’t forget and want to go back to?
The Appalachian mountains.
7. Do you trust easily?
It depends on the initial feeling I get.
8. Do you think before you act, or act before you think?
A little of both, depending on what situation it is and what kind of mood I’m in.

Losing my dear friend, Melissa.
10. Do you have a good body image?
Yes, for the most part.

Alana at Mommy Logic has tagged me. Yaaaaaaaaay. I have to tell you six quirky unspectacular things about me.
1. I was so skinny as a little girl that my mom had to buy me extra-slim clothes and then tighten the waist even further with a safety pin so they’d stay up.
2. Because I was so skinny in school, my sweet, first grade teacher called me (very lovingly) Sandra Lynn the Big Fat Hen. She was the BEST teacher ever.

Here I am explaining how much easier overalls are than safety-pins. Plus they make me look bigger, Mom.
3. I played the bass clarinet in high school.
4. I can turn my toes under and walk on them. Yes, it’s true.
5. I hated my freckles growing up, but I love them now.
6. I wanted 10 children, but hubby only wanted 2, so I did really good to get 4 before he totally glazed over.
NOW, I tag Kristina at Our Lifesong, Michele at My Blessings From Above, Amity at Home Basics, Cindi at Cindi’s Sewing, Andrea at Dean’s Academy, and Sandra at My Inspired Heart.
If you see your name, you’ve been tagged! If you want to play along, you are invited to!!! If you are too busy, then just have fun reading and know that I enjoy your blog.

a) What was I doing 10 years ago?
I was 8 months along in my fourth pregnancy, trying to endure the summer heat, driving a van with no air conditioning, gardening very little, and just waiting on my much-longed-for first and only daughter.
~~
~~
b) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today.
- Write to my cousin, Richard.
- Cook the squash and broccoli in my refrigerator
- Clean up and mulch two one garden beds – ok
- Two spelling lessons with Joseph – oops, but it’s summer, what can we say?
- Get caught up on the bills done
~~
~~
c) Snacks I enjoy:
- Yogurt with wheat germ
- Pumpkin seeds
- Chocolate
- Tortilla chips with melted cheddar cheese
- Bread and olive oil
~~
~~
d) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
Pay off all debt and help my family members to do the same. Help families in need. Buy a wonderful place in the country and a cottage by the sea. Visit Scotland and Japan.
~~
~~
e) Places I have lived:
San Antonio, Texas
Apache Junction, Arizona
~~

On another note, I tried my hand at Japanese ink painting, or Sumi-e, last night. It was so much fun. I have tried pastels, acrylics, and colored pencils. I am truly no artist, but I think I could really, really love ink painting. The older I get, the more I appreciate simplicity. Ink drawing traditionally only requires one color: black.
Here are my first attempts.

I was thinking that it would be fun to share your very most favorite thing in your house. Not to be focused just on material things, of course, but do you have something that just makes you happy? Something that is sentimental? Something that you hope you never have to get rid of?

My favorite thing is my spice cabinet, and it certainly has a story behind it. It is sort of a focal point in our kitchen and gets used every single day as we cook our family meals. I think it fits perfectly into our 1921 home.

I love the rustic old handles and the rusty latches on the doors. I love the glass panes that allow me to see all my spices, including some old-looking Watkins spices. The rusty-but-sturdy hinges appeal to my liking of all things rustic and useful, and I even love the peeling paint.

The story behind the cabinet makes it even more special. I had been looking for a spice rack, but needed something bigger than the standard little spice racks I was finding in the thrift stores at the time.
I walked into a local antique store one day and chatted with a newly-made friend. I enjoyed so much looking at the items in her rented space in the store. She just had an eye for finding things that I loved. Not that I could afford anything I wanted, but it was fun to look and dream. Anyway, when I saw this cabinet it was exactly what I had imagined for my kitchen. It was the perfect size and had that look I needed. Anything too new just does not fit into my old house. It clashes.

I wanted that cabinet so much, I figured that I would put in on lay-away, budget a portion of my grocery money, and pay it off over a period of three months. It went well for about a month and then we had a financial crisis and corners would have to be cut. I knew that luxuries could not be afforded and the spice cabinet was a luxury (as much as I hated to admit it). So I went to the antique store, not even expecting to see my new friend, as she was usually not there unless stocking her booth, but she was there that day. It was with embarrassment that I told her of my situation and that I needed to end my contract, losing a portion of the money, but I felt I would be unable to meet my obligations to pay any more payments. I was astonished at what she said.
She told me that she had — for some reason – felt like I was having a hard time. She said that the Lord had put me in her heart and that if in fact it did turn out to be true that I was struggling, she was going to mark the bill paid at whatever point I was in the contract and just give me the cabinet. And that’s what she did!
So every time I look at this cabinet, I am reminded of the kindnesses that have been shown to me, even in little things, and in things that I really didn’t need, but just wanted. I am reminded that there are many, many kind people in the world, no matter how harsh our world can seem at times. And also I just love how this old rustic spice cabinet fits into my home.
You’re invited to leave a link to your blog and YOUR favorite thing and why you love it so much! It’ll be fun! I may even tag a few people.
Lynn
PS – I did decide to tag 3 people: Hannah at Cultivating Home, Patty at Morning Ramble, and Shauna over at Shauna Rumbling. They may or may not feel like joining in, but it would be nothing less than intriguing to me to find out if they have a favorite thing and what that thing would be! It was hard to stop at three blogs, because there are SO many blogger friends on line and I would love to know everyone’s favorite thing. So anyone join in!
Hey, feel free to pass the question on!!

I have been tagged! Thank you, Oney! This is my first game of “tag.” ~:-D I’ll be tagging two more people, so here are the rules!
Here’s how it works: Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their seven things, as well as these rules. You need to tag others and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them that they have been tagged and to read your blog
7 Random Facts About Lynn
- I met my husband on a blind date. We were married 3 months later. We had our first child 9 months and 3 days after we were married. (Talk about a roller coaster ride!)
- I wanted 10 children. My husband would have stopped at 2. So I am thrilled to have 4.
- Barring illness or force majeure, I am planning to grow my hair to my ankles.
- If I had the chance to meet any one person, living or deceased, it would be my husband’s father.
- I love to listen to old Sherlock Holmes radio shows on cassette tape.
- I am an Aries, though I don’t read horoscopes!

So that’s me. Now, I tag Ivy because she writes about the greatest, neatest homeschooling adventures, and Kristina because she always has a wonderful story in pictures. ~:-D

I was surfing around this morning and ended up at The Daily Meme. I was looking through the lost memes and found a fun one called Another (5) Book Meme. I guess that just means it’s the fifth book meme found?
Anyhoo, here goes:
1) Take 5 books off your bookshelf.
2) Book #1 first sentence.
3) Book #2 last sentence on page 50.
4) Book #3 second sentence on page 100.
5) Book #4 next to the last sentence on page 150.
6) Book #5 final sentence of the book.
7) Make the five sentences into a paragraph.
Okay, here I go to get my books. I took a few pics of some of my bookshelves for you to look at while I am running around getting my books. Here I go. I’ll grab books off of different ones.

I’m back. And now here’s my crazy paragraph:
Between the year 1700 and the present day, the ways that wars are conducted has changed beyond recognition. The reception was better and he didn’t interrupt the television or the music that they had listened to. While James VI, who had been barely a year old at the time of his coronation, was growing up under the care of his learned but disagreeable tutor George Buchanan, who methodically thrashed and overworked him, the country was once again ruled by a succession of Regents. He had no children. Good news…ting ting…good news she sang Our day’s not done…it’s just begun.
Whew. Anyone else want to try? ~:-D Make sure your books have enough pages.

About Lynn
I am the mother of four delightful children: a 23-year-old son, a 20-year-old son, a 17-year-old son, and a bright and bubbly 13-year-old daughter. I share an apartment home with my 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. My little home on the internet is called Rose Cottage because of my love for gardening, roses, and all things romantic and Victorian. Welcome.
I'm a North Carolina girl and I love sharing North Carolina links and information. I do medical transcription from home. My hobbies include making sweet little dolls from clay who are named and have their own stories to tell. I also make old-fashioned brooches. These are for sale in my Etsy shop.
For 13 years continuously, I homeschooled some or all of our four children, but the time came that our homeschool had to be closed. It was the end of a beautiful chapter in my life. I will always be a strong supporter of homeschooling and I will continue to review books and maintain my homeschool website, The Healthy Homeschool.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.
