I absolutely LOVE seeing the creative side of my daughter come out when we really get into playing dolls in her room. She has her art desk close by, so it’s no trouble to stop and invent whatever you need in the midst of playing.
Take, for instance…

this fine shower. In the middle of redoing some rooms, Princess of the Universe decided that the dolls absolutely positively had to have a shower installed in their bathroom.
Okay. Yes. But OF COURSE!
She used a little clear plastic box (left over from who knows what), some light wood material left over from the recent airplane building, and a little condiment container for the shower head. She even used one of her foam stickers as a no-slip pad in the tub, which has been trimmed in the most beautiful of polka dot tiles.
And that was not all. Princess of the Universe loves to go to the HGTV website and watch the decorators transform rooms from dull to DrAmAtIc!!! She especially likes David Bromstad. She got the idea for doing a custom piece of art work on a box. If you know David, then you’ll know about the boxes. Anyhoo…

This art on a box top really pops in the fancy-schmancy dolls dressing room!
Yes, I love to see her creative side, but I also love just being with her. Playing side by side, laughing, putting little things into place in the doll house, with our faces practically side by side. I guess I’m just in love with my children.

Another recent creation by Princess of the Universe is this sweet little crib/playpen for the babies. Let me tell you, it has come in VERY handy in keeping the dolls safe from wild horses, fires, storms, and even a bear attack!
Oh yes.
WHO would have every expected that a well known bear from preschool days would wander out of his bookshelf and over to the doll house to attack??!!
Not I.
On a school note, I am absolutely LOVING Grass Sandals: The Travels of Basho by Dawnine Spivak. I think this is my all-time favorite FIAR book. Well, I’ve said that before haven’t I?
No, really. There’s something so totally endearing about this book, not to mention how educational it is. And can anyone say beautifully illustrated? It is illustrated by Demi.

Princess of the Universe works on one of the lessons from Five In A Row.
Shakespeare anyone? We are still reading Hamlet and enjoying all these words you never hear anymore. I was Bernardo today. Joseph was Horatio. Princess of the Universe was Marcellus. (I think I have all those spelled right.)
Well, another day has come to a close. Now it’s time for bedtime stories and sleep. There’ll be more fun — hopefully — tomorrow.

There’s been much activity around the doll house this evening.

We recently finished up Snowflake Bentley (Caldecott Medal Book) for Five In A Row, and you know how I love to finish up with a storybook souvenir for the doll house.
Let me just say that the dolls were wild with excitement to find out that Snowflake Bentley was a distant cousin on their family tree! And they inherited the most amazing old photograph.

So much to do today! I am working on the January newsletter for my website, The Healthy Homeschool. The goal was to publish monthly, but it’s not easy keeping everything done. (Tracy, I just do what I can in a day and then hope for another day. I like to stay busy, but alas there are only so many hours in each day! And I do use Mod-Podge.)
I am requiring each one of my homeschooled children to contribute something to the newsletter, so this should prove interesting. Joseph already has his contribution. We’ll see what Princess of the Universe comes up with. I’ll place a link when it’s done.

A couple of days ago my husband brought home a package of model airplanes for Miss Priss. She set to work putting them together yesterday. It was a good lesson in ReAdInG InStRuCtIoNs before starting something. That’s all I’m gonna say about that. She did get them put together, though, and they flew beautifully! That was her science lesson for yesterday.

Last night we started placing furniture in the new doll house. We put a tiny cuphook-type screw in the ceiling and hung our little paper lantern. I love it. The walls need some color and some art pieces, but we’ll tackle that in time.
It was just really fun to get back into playing. As you can see, one of the little woodland folk, Paisley, has been invited to come in and visit. She’s behaving herself. So far. Unfortunately, thanks to Michaela’s imagination, a Fisher Price horse went bucking wildly through the house last night and messed a bunch of stuff up, so we’ve got some clean-up to do tonight.
For our bedtime story we read Yonder .

This book is SO sweet. I, of course, cried at the last of it (like I always do with a good melancholy sort of book) and Princess of the Universe had to wait on the last few sentences while I got my sniffles under control. I cannot believe I have not seen this book before now. It would be an awesome go-along for Warm As Wool or They Were Strong and Good , because of the homesteading and strong family theme. It also has a theme of planting plum trees that grow and produce over time, so any orchard or tree or farming theme would work too.

Before going to bed, I couldn’t help but notice this. Bitty Baby looked to me to be a bit concerned that there was an alien in her crib, but this is a child’s world after all, so I guess it works.
On a gardening note, I have to step outside each day and see a bit of green. I am thinking of spring, but enjoying winter. Yes, I do realize what month it is.

I appreciate the herbs for producing even a little bit. I also noted many bright green dandelions in the vegetable garden. They will make a healthy infusion today.

And look poking through the ground! It would appear to be hyacinth or tulips. One would think that I would know, but I planted so much in this bed last year….

Rosemary, I love you. You have a touch of blue even in the coldest months. What would I do without you?
Just a couple more things. Diane, this

is the first film version of Hamlet that comes to mind. Do you have a recommendation? Anyone have a recommendation? I am going to pursue seeing a theatrical production of Shakespeare, but not sure I can find Hamlet this year.
Finally, my son Joseph said something this morning that I appreciated. He said when we lose, we look back and see what we did wrong. We note acutely what we could have done better. When we win, however, we sometimes go on without looking at what we could have done better. I want to remember this, in times of winning and losing.

Life has been crazy busy here. A good kind of crazy busy. I did finish up the faerie house this morning, just in time for tomorrow.

There’s more info on these little woodland creatures and their house at homemadedollhouse.blogspot.com.
Happy Holidays,

I love the pretty Merry Christmas cards we receive as the days get closer and closer to Christmas. Holiday cards. It’s definitely a favorite part of this time of year.

Snug as a bug I sit on my loveseat, warm and toasty, and read them.
The cozy red and white throw? My sweet Grandma who died last year on Thanksgiving Day, made this throw. It’s Swedish darning. I don’t keep it out all the time because I want it to stay pretty and clean. The cheerful red and white makes it the perfect new Christmas tradition. I’ll take it out this time of year. I would love to have my Grandma sitting here with me, but the throw brings happy memories of her.
Princess of the Universe has no idea, but this will be wrapped up for her on Christmas Day.

Hubby took some time yesterday to put the beadboard on the back so that the rooms look finished. I got an amazing deal on this house by taking a 50% off any regularly priced item coupon into A.C. Moore. They honored it, and this doll house fell from 99 dollars to 50 dollars. Just like that.
I got the coupon here. I was not sure AC Moore would accept it, but the dates were good and I did ask before I took the coupon to the register. It scanned perfectly and they honored it. Now, beware. I am not that familiar with that coupon site and I have not explored the entire site, so be cautious. Enjoy, but be cautious.
There’ll be more info on the doll house at homemadedollhouse.blogspot.com.
Be Happy This Day.

Yes, I am done stressing about school for right now because it totally went on the back burner this week. Appointments. Shopping. Family traveling home. Get-togethers. I ask you, how can anyone do school work? It’s time for our winter break here, and I intend to enjoy it.

Is all dead in winter? I don’t think so. The withered rose blooms on my rose bushes look so pretty to me. There’s a sad sort of beauty about them: clearly dead or dying, yet with a touch of summer’s red-pink blush left. Makes me think of our lives. The brevity. The uncertainty. The beauty. The joy. We’d better enjoy one day at a time.
Oh yes. Life, I think I said. I pulled a bloom from a rose bush and this little mayfly-looking winged creature came out. I felt bad for disturbing its resting place, but it flew away, hopefully to find another rosebud.
There’s life, all the time, when we look for it.
On other, less serious note, I’d advise you to visit homemadedollhouse.blogspot.com to read about our beautiful foreign doll and her current endeavor.

It is a worthwhile project, as I feel sure you’ll agree.
Around the net: I stumbled across the most beautiful blog with the most adorable header yesterday. Just take a look. I made a screenshot because I figure that after winter this header will be gone.

You’ll have to visit Turkey Feathers yourself to see the snow falling across the header of this beautiful blog.
Enjoy this day.

Yesterday I looked out my front window and saw Fluffy asleep in a chair, with both of her newest kittens piled asleep on top of her. What a sweet little sight!

Usually the kitties all get up and run to the door when it’s opened, but not this time. This must have been a really, really good catnap. The little kittens did not even stir. And Fluffy only yawned really big a couple of times and then shut her eyes again.

Aren’t they sweet? And to think we weren’t going to have anymore cats. Even Hubby likes them. Outside, of course.
On a more crafty note, my sewing/craft desk is such a mess right now!

But between homemade gift tags and doll house stuff it’s bound to be!

I want to learn to make books with pages, and not just a piece of cardboard in the center. This one’s cute and of course it will go on the shelf with the others, but I must get them to lay flatter.
Oh yes, I did say Faery House, didn’t I?

Remember the shelf I took the door off of? It is slowly turning into a two-story faery house. The flash from my camera shows every wrinkle in the paper background, but it’s really not that bad, I promise. Plus there are other layers and accessories to go in. My decision is this: Should it be a one-faery home or a two-faery home? I’m thinking two. There’ll be more posted at homemadedollhouse.blogspot.com as these projects progress.
And finally, we started trying to get a picture for our 2008 Christmas cards. This one may have to do, as it’s so hard to get all the kids together at one time and have them all (semi) smiling at one time.

The children’s heights are not accurately captured in our pictures, as they are standing on a set of steps, but I’m sure you figured that out!
Thought you might want to compare to last year.

You see I have one who just doesn’t smile as easily.
Wishing you simply Happy Holidays.

On the menu last night:
- Cole slaw
- Mediterranean tuna salad
- Homemade apple sauce
- Whole wheat flax seed bread from my bread machine

The main thing I wanted to show you was the whole wheat flax seed bread. While searcing on line I found a very good recipe to make this in the bread machine. You can find it here: Whole Wheat Flax Seed Bread. I baked mine on the whole wheat setting and it came out very moist and soft on the inside — but with body, with a delicious crust. We were very happy with it. It’ll be really good today toasted with some of that Mediterranean tuna salad.
On a doll house note…

Princess of the Universe and I managed to put several new little treasures into the doll house yesterday. If you get a chance, you can see them at homemadedollhouse.blogspot.com.
Well, off to the work desk I go! Have a great Friday!

Corny, I know, but what else would one say?

I went to see my favorite aunt yesterday (and uncle) – she’s also one of my favorite people (he is too) and she gave me a bunch of eggs. She raises chickens and sells organic, free-range eggs at local farmers’ markets. She’s gathering over 100 eggs a day right now and had just a few more than she could use. I won’t be needing to buy any eggs for my holiday cooking and baking!

A bit of wire fence is obscuring a perfect view, but here are a couple of her chickens. I think they are pretty creatures.

I love the old buildings around her land. Perhaps this barn needs some work, but isn’t there something rustic and lovely about it? I can just imagine it newly-built. It must have been a fine barn.
Our trip yesterday included more than one stop. Princess of the Universe and I have been wanting to do some wall-papering in the doll house, so another trip to The Scrap Exchange was very much in order.

My couch was covered in little bits of this-and-that after we got home. Be sure and check the HomeMade DollHouse later today for update on the dolls’ home. We did come home with a beautiful roll of wall paper in our bag.
While at The Scrap Exchange I found a real treasure. I just could not believe it. Well, actually I could, because they get all manner of things there, but I was so happy at my good fortune to have been in at a time when these were not all sold out: gallery quality art posters which will turn my tall stairwell into a little museum. They were only $2.50 apiece. Some of these prints are about 48 inches tall.
I’ve flipped through the stack to get some pictures for you.

And my personal favorite: Springtime

Are they not worth every cent? My humble hallway shall be adorned with some pretty pieces of art work! Talk about an art wall!
That’s all for now. We’ve got to get busy doing our school work today and working on the doll house.
Happy Thursday.

About Lynn
I am the mother of four delightful children: a 23-year-old son, a 20-year-old son, a 17-year-old son, and a bright and bubbly 13-year-old daughter. I share an apartment home with my 17-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter. My little home on the internet is called Rose Cottage because of my love for gardening, roses, and all things romantic and Victorian. Welcome.
I'm a North Carolina girl and I love sharing North Carolina links and information. I do medical transcription from home. My hobbies include making sweet little dolls from clay who are named and have their own stories to tell. I also make old-fashioned brooches. These are for sale in my Etsy shop.
For 13 years continuously, I homeschooled some or all of our four children, but the time came that our homeschool had to be closed. It was the end of a beautiful chapter in my life. I will always be a strong supporter of homeschooling and I will continue to review books and maintain my homeschool website, The Healthy Homeschool.

My Symphony
To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony.
